\n Talk about burning love.<\/p>\n

A British man\u2019s plan to propose to his girlfriend went up in smoke when the tea light candles he used to spell out \u201cmarry me?\u201d caught fire and burned down their apartment.<\/p>\n

Albert Ndreu spent four hours on Monday setting up 60 balloons and lighting 100 candles to pop the question to Valerija Madevic, according to SWNS. Music was playing, and a bottle of Chianti wine was waiting to be uncorked.<\/p>\n

After setting up his decor, he left to retrieve his soon-to-be-fiancee. When they returned around 8:30 p.m., smoke was flowing from their Sheffield, Yorks home, which they moved into a month ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe walked up the stairs to the flat and there was smoke everywhere, I told him to call the firefighters because our house was on fire,\u201d remembered Madevic. \u201cI was in total shock, I was shaking because it looked like it was really bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the smoke and property damage, Ndreu, 26, got down on one knee amid the rubble.<\/p>\n

Madevic was shocked when he popped the question. \u201cHe pulled out a box from his pocket and I was just speechless,\u201d she said. \u201cHe said that he messed up \u2014 our house was literally in flames \u2014 but asked me if I would marry him. And I said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best news<\/a>? She still said yes,\u201d Ndreu said. \u201cI\u00a0was so worried about everything going wrong I never imagined I could set the house on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bride-to-be expected something was wrong when he picked her up from work with flowers in tow. \u201cWhen I got the flowers I thought he must have broken something or destroyed something in the house,\u201d she said. \u201cLittle did I know he had destroyed our entire living room.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couple, who met a year ago on a dating app<\/a>, is now living with Ndreu\u2019s cousin while their home is repaired. Only a laptop, some books and a speaker were permanently damaged. \u201cIn the end, we\u2019re in good health and we\u2019re together, and that\u2019s all that matters,\u201d said Madevic. \u201cYou can replace things in the house, but not our love for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

They plan to wed on the one-year anniversary of the fire and hope to invite the local fire department to thank them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope this serves as a warning for others that maybe there is such a thing as too much love, or too many candles,\u201d said the groom.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
