able to see white privilege \u2014\u00a0and that recognition could translate to support for policies to tackle racial inequities, new research says.<\/p>\n<p> White men who say they\u2019ve experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> disadvantages in the workplace based on their socioeconomic status, disability, age, sexual orientation or religion are more likely than their white male counterparts who had not experienced such disadvantages to recognize white privilege, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0749597821001102\" class=\"icon none\">a new paper<\/a> published in the journal Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Researchers from Cornell, Duke and Tulane Universities conducted 10 studies with more than 5,100 people in the U.S. and U.K., examining white men\u2019s perceptions of white privilege in the workplace and their experiences of disadvantages based on a social category.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, they found that \u201cthe experience of disadvantage can provide enlightenment on white privilege,\u201d study co-author Ashleigh Shelby Rosette, a professor of management and organizations at Duke\u2019s Fuqua School of Business, told MarketWatch. <\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u2018Although white men sit atop of two of the most predominant hierarchies \u2014 race and gender \u2014 they are not a monolithic group.\u2019<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Researchers from Cornell, Duke and Tulane Universities <\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       In other words, she said, white men\u2019s experience of disadvantage on one social hierarchy can help them see their advantage on another.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cAlthough white men sit atop of two of the most predominant hierarchies \u2014 race and gender \u2014 they are not a monolithic group,\u201d Rosette said. \u201cWe wanted to explore how other subordinate identities, and the corresponding experience of disadvantage because of those identities, would influence how they viewed their status atop the racial hierarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study defined white privilege as economic and social advantages that white people experience and racial minorities do not \u2014 advantages that come about \u201cthrough no merit of your own, purely because of race,\u201d as Rosette put it. These can crop up in myriad places, she added, including housing, schools, healthcare and corporate America.<\/p>\n<p>As MarketWatch has previously reported, many people in the U.S. tend to deny or rationalize facts about systemic inequality and privilege. Though inequality has increased in recent decades, concerns about it have declined, and many people continue to believe that the country is a meritocracy where success comes to individuals who work for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> Racial and economic inequality persists. Why do many people deny it?<\/p>\n<p>Rosette, for her part, noted that the idea of privilege can feel \u201cquite threatening\u201d to some of the core values central to American society, including individual achievement and merit. But white privilege doesn\u2019t exist in lieu of personal achievement, she added; it works in tandem.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIn society and in organizations, you can have at least two systems that are working in tandem: a system based on individual merit and a system based on privilege,\u201d she said. \u201cOftentimes, we want to only acknowledge one \u2026\u00a0but just because we don\u2019t acknowledge that other system doesn\u2019t mean that it does not exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosette and her co-authors invoked a 2019 quote by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a white gay man who was mayor of South Bend, Ind., and a 2020 presidential candidate, from when he was challenged during a Democratic presidential debate about his outreach to Black voters.<\/p>\n<p>In his response \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2019\/12\/03\/what-mayor-pete-really-said-about-being-gay-prejudice-blacks\/\" class=\"icon none\">which inspired some controversy at the time<\/a> \u2014\u00a0Buttigieg said, \u201cwhile I do not have the experience of ever having been discriminated against because of the color of my skin, I do have the experience of sometimes feeling like a stranger in my own country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWearing this wedding ring in a way that couldn\u2019t have h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened two elections ago lets me know just how deep my obligation is to help those whose rights are on the line every day, even if they are nothing like me in their experience,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Broadly speaking, the study\u2019s findings suggest that \u201cat least among White men, an enhanced perspective of the social hierarchy coupled with positive self-evaluation may spur a desire to generate social change,\u201d the authors wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is important because white men continue to hold a disproportionate share of influential positions in society, they added.
