So what does the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack include, and is it worth it?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_the_Nintendo_Switch_Online_Expansion_Pack\"><\/span>What Is the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack allows you to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online and claim some additional features, including more emulation options and downloadable content (DLC) packs for select <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<p>A standard Nintendo Switch Online subscription costs $19.99 for 12 months (with monthly and tri-monthly subscriptions available at $3.99 and $7.99 respectively), plus a family option for up to eight account holders at $34.99 per year. While access to the N64 and Genesis apps is gated to the expansion pack, the DLC packs can be purchased separately and kept forever.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_May_Come_to_the_Expansion_Pack_in_the_Future\"><\/span>More May Come to the Expansion Pack in the Future<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack was first announced it only included access to the N64 and Sega Genesis apps and the <em>Happy Home Paradise<\/em> DLC for\u00a0<em>Animal Crossing: New Horizons\u00a0<\/em>which launched a few weeks later. There were a handful of popular N64 titles like\u00a0<em>Mario Kart 64<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Super Mario 64<\/em>, plus Genesis titles like\u00a0<em>Streets of Rage 2<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Ecco the Dolphin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After launch, N64 titles like\u00a0<em>F-Zero X<\/em> and <em>Banjo-Kazooie<\/em> also became available for play, with Nintendo promising more games will be added in the future. This is how emulation worked with the NES and SNES apps and is likely key in Nintendo\u2019s strategy in keeping subscribers happy.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest inclusion to date though is the announcement that the upcoming DLC for\u00a0<em>Mario Kart 8: Deluxe\u00a0<\/em>will also be included with the expansion pack. This DLC adds 48 courses, with the final installment not due until 2023. It\u2019s even possible that the company could add existing DLC packs for games like\u00a0<em>Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em>, though there\u2019s no precedence for this as yet. Upcoming emulators could be gated behind the expansion pack, a move Nintendo has already committed to with the N64 and Genesis.<\/p>\n<p>The take-away is that the expansion pack has already improved in terms of value since being introduced less than 12 months ago.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Expansion_Packs_Value_Is_Subjective\"><\/span>The Expansion Pack\u2019s Value Is Subjective<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Whether or not you find value in the expansion pack depends heavily on how you use your Switch, and how you measure value. It also depends on what other devices you have access to, and whether the convenience of access to features like N64 and Sega Genesis emulation is worth it to you.<\/p>\n<p>Like any subscription-based service, you only get access to the features bundled with the expansion pack for as long as you\u2019re subscribed. If you decide to cancel your subscription then you\u2019ll lose access to everything, including DLC content for games that you own like <em>Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-788319\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/n64_retro_switch.jpeg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"N64 Emulation on the Switch\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Nintendo<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you decide to buy the DLC for these games outright, they are yours forever. You\u2019ll always be able to access them for as long as Nintendo\u2019s servers remain online. Each of these DLC packs can be purchased for $24.99 separately, which means outright ownership currently costs the same as a year\u2019s subscription to the expansion pack.<\/p>\n<p>Emulation of the N64 and Sega Genesis (as well as any future systems Nintendo decides to add to the higher tier) may also appeal at face value. Nintendo seems to have decided to drip-feed titles rather than release a large library at once, and there has been some criticism about the way the company has implemented emulation.<\/p>\n<p>Early reports of the service were poor, noting a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/10\/26\/22746897\/nintendo-switch-online-n64-emulation-quality-bad\">lack of fog and texture downgrades<\/a> in titles like <em>The Legend of Zelda:\u00a0Ocarina of Time<\/em>. Nintendo followed-up with an update that seems to have improved things, but there\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/au\/news\/turns-out-the-nintendo-switch-onlines-n64-emulator-isnt-as-bad-as-it-seems\">still a way to go<\/a>. Anyone who is already subscribed will be able to take advantage of any additions as they arrive.<\/p>\n<p>But if all you want is a basic suite of features including online play and cloud saves, a standard $19.99 Nintendo Switch Online yearly membership is all you need.
