\n The Beirut port officials in charge of the 2,750-ton ammonium nitrate stash that exploded like an atomic bomb were reportedly put under house arrest Wednesday \u2014 as the death toll rose to at least 135.<\/p>\n

It was not clear how many officials would be included or their seniority level, official sources told Reuters as they revealed the house arrest under the watch of Lebanon\u2019s army.<\/p>\n

Lebanon\u2019s President, Michel Aoun, had earlier warned that those responsible for Tuesday\u2019s horror would face \u201cthe harshest punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the government was \u201cdetermined to investigate and expose what happ<\/a>ened as soon as possible, to hold them responsible and the negligent accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ammonium nitrate \u2014 the highly-combustible material used in terror attacks like Timothy McVeigh\u2019s 1995 bombing that killed 168 in Oklahoma City \u2014 had been in a warehouse after being seized from a Russian businessman\u2019s abandoned cargo ship in 2014.<\/p>\n

There had been repeated warnings about its dangers \u2014 including one just six months ago when inspectors said the seized material could \u201cblow up all of Beirut,\u201d sources told Reuters.<\/p>\n

As rescue teams continued to pull out bodies and hunt for the missing, officials revealed that the death toll had reached at least 135 \u2014 a figure they expect to continue rising in the coming days, with many still missing.<\/p>\n

At least 5,000 people were also injured, and up to 300,000 are feared to have been left homeless.<\/p>\n

The explosion was the most powerful ever to rip through Beirut, a city still scarred by civil war that ended three decades ago and reeling from an economic meltdown and a surge in coronavirus infections.<\/p>\n

The blast rattled buildings on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, about 100 miles away.<\/p>\n

Beirut\u2019s governor, Marwan Abboud, compared the devastation to the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during World War II.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my life, I haven\u2019t seen destruction on this scale,\u201d he said, wiping away tears as he described the \u201cnational calamity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The government also declared a two-week state of emergency, effectively giving the military full powers during this time.<\/p>\n
