Gotham City just can\u2019t get its act together. It\u2019s been a hotbed of crime and decrepitude for \u2014 what? 83 years now? \u2014 And try though Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck and now Robert Pattison might, the metropolis gets worse and worse.<\/p>\n

Running time: 175 minutes. Rated PG-13 (strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language and some suggestive material). In theaters March 4.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In the latest perfunctory film, \u201cThe Batman,\u201d Gotham is bleaker than ever. Too bleak, if you ask me. Director Matt Reeves\u2019 downer movie embraces the realism of \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d \u2014 the opposite of Tim Burton\u2019s purple-hazed funhouse \u2014 only without the payoff of excellent writing and acting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an unshakable feeling here of \u201cWhat\u2019s the point?\u201d<\/p>\n

Not to mention the nearly three-hour length. Holy runtime!<\/p>\n

Bruce Wayne has been millennialized. Whereas previous iterations hid their crimefighting alter ego by being charming, tuxedo-clad social<\/a>ites at parties, Pattison\u2019s billionaire Bruce is a brooding recluse who stays home all the time and whom many residents haven\u2019t seen since he was a little boy. That\u2019s good, because even with a pointy mask and a cape, there\u2019s no mistaking Rob\u2019s \u201cTwilight\u201d jawline.<\/p>\n

He still works alongside Alfred (Andy Serkis, making no impression) and Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), who brings Batman to the crime scene of Gotham\u2019s brutally murdered mayor. There\u2019s a letter on the body: \u201cTo The Batman.\u201d Inside it \u2014 a riddle.<\/p>\n

What unfolds is a slowly paced detective noir, with Selina Kyle (Zo\u00eb Kravitz) \u2014 a k a Catwoman \u2014 acting as the not-so-helpless damsel. She wants Batman to help protect her friend, an escort who was having an affair with the mayor. Kravitz is taking a catnap; Michelle Pfeiffer was way more fun.<\/p>\n

Then \u201cThe Batman,\u201d for better or worse, begins to resemble the \u201cSaw\u201d films. There\u2019s a series<\/a> of escalating killings by a mystery assailant known as the Riddler, who uses such unsavory murder weapons as rats, a carpet-tucking tool, bombs and more, leaving a clue on every corpse.<\/p>\n

Going the old-school mystery route makes the viewer tune out, and our attention spans are tried even more by the acting. The Riddler, Batman, Catwoman, Gordon, Alfred and pretty much everybody else whisper through the entire movie. \u201cCome again?,\u201d you want to repeatedly shout at these aspiring librarians.<\/p>\n

They quietly trudge through a banal story that, other than the Riddler (Paul Dano), is a stage for some of Batman\u2019s more boring adversaries. Too much screen time is given to Sal Maroni and Carmine Falcone, basic Mafiosos. Batman, in full winged regalia, goes to their dull nightclub over and over again.<\/p>\n

Reeves does craft some piercing images. Batman holding a flare toward the end of the film, and a fiery highway chase and a fight by strobe light all make for thrilling imagery. Regardless, it\u2019s the story, stupid.<\/p>\n

With not much to sink his fangs into, Pattison is wasted here. Normally, he\u2019s an electric, funny and unpredictable actor \u2014 but that\u2019s the opposite of Batman, who hides by necessity. He doesn\u2019t act conflicted, determined or scared \u2014 he just seems bored.<\/p>\n

As for Dano, ever since Heath Ledger won an Oscar for playing the Joker in \u201cThe Dark Knight,\u201d every actor treats Batman villains like they\u2019re King Freakin\u2019 Lear. His final monologue is grossly overplayed, as though he thinks it\u2019s his own \u201cor else it gets the hose again\u201d speech from \u201cThe Silence of the Lambs.\u201d It\u2019s annoying.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Batman\u201d is the first Caped Crusader adventure in a while to come off as completely purposeless. Christopher Nolan\u2019s movies reframed the comics as realistic, psychologically complex tales of urban blight, and Affleck\u2019s Bruce was built to fit into a wider DC universe. \u201cThe Batman\u201d is here just to ensure that Marvel has box office competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a shame Joaquin Phoenix\u2019s \u201cJoker\u201d was the one-off and \u201cThe Batman\u201d has planned sequels. I\u2019d rather see more Arthur Fleck.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
