In late February 2022, AT&amp;T became the first major wireless carrier to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/100317643\/type\/am\/sid\/110995\/https:\/\/www.att.com\/support\/article\/wireless\/KM1324171\/\">phase out its 3G network<\/a>\u00a0in what it\u2019s calling a \u201c3G sunset\u201d as it continues to improve its 5G offerings, and it\u2019s just the first of many.<\/p>\n<p>Verizon wanted to do the same back in 2020, and before the end of the year, older connected vehicles will no longer have 3G service and car internet in the United States. For those wondering, 3G connectivity supports many features, including emergency crash notifications, remote start, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Several features could stop working on 3G-connected cars as carriers transition to 4G and 5G services, and here\u2019s what you can do about it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_Will_My_Vehicle_Lose_3G\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">When Will My Vehicle Lose 3G?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109550\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2022\/02\/3942e002.png\" alt=\"The AT&amp;T logo.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">AT&amp;T<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first carrier to shut down its 3G network is AT&amp;T, which flipped off the switch on\u00a0<strong>February 22nd, 2022<\/strong>. Other major network providers will do the same in the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n<p>This will affect everyone from Acura, Audi, Honda, Tesla, Toyota, Subaru, Volkswagen, Nissan, Volvo, etc. Cars with Verizon have a little longer to go, as the company\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/100317643\/type\/am\/sid\/110995\/https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/support\/knowledge-base-218813\/\">announced<\/a>\u00a0it would slowly end support for 3G, and the network will finally shut down by <strong>December 31st, 2022<\/strong>. Those with T-Mobile will see <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/support\/coverage\/t-mobile-network-evolution\">networks shut down<\/a> by <strong>July 1st, 2022<\/strong>, with 2G networks closing later. Unfortunately, many will lose some or even all of their connected features.\u00a0Some of these include emergency crash response alerts or notifications, S.O.S. mode, real-time navigation, remote diagnostics, remote start, remote unlock, HVAC controls,\u00a0 OTA software updates, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Automakers are well aware of this problem, and some are actively working on solutions or may offer upgrade paths soon. But, according\u00a0to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/car-safety\/3g-wireless-network-shutdown-impact-on-car-safety-a2215482633\/\"><em>ConsumerReports<\/em><\/a>, while manufacturers can upgrade lots of cars, millions of others will lose some of these services for good.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the overall impact is unknown and will vary based on your vehicle, when it was made, and which 3G services or carrier it has.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_Do_Next\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">What to Do Next?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Some owners may not experience any problems and will instead get an over-the-air software update from the manufacturer, while others will need to go to a dealership to get updates. For example, Ford and Mazda use the driver\u2019s mobile device emergency services connections, so that\u2019s not a problem. Unfortunately, others will need a physical upgrade to 4G, and that cost can vary from a small fee to upwards of $900 if you own select Honda models.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is 2015 and older Tesla vehicles, which will lose 3G soon, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/3g-cellular-network-retirement\">owners can schedule an upgrade for $200<\/a>. In addition, Volkswagen and others will offer 3rd party solutions that can range upwards of $295 for the upgrade and monthly fees for unlimited data.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this varies from vehicle to vehicle and depends on which features and 3G services are used.
