{"id":411034,"date":"2022-03-01T18:42:33","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T15:42:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nyc-diplomatic-compound-reported-hotbed-of-russian-espionage\/"},"modified":"2022-03-01T18:42:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T15:42:33","slug":"nyc-diplomatic-compound-reported-hotbed-of-russian-espionage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nyc-diplomatic-compound-reported-hotbed-of-russian-espionage\/","title":{"rendered":"#NYC diplomatic compound reported hotbed of Russian espionage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NYC diplomatic compound reported hotbed of Russian espionage<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A 20-story high-rise atop a hillock in the Bronx is home to some of the world\u2019s most powerful diplomats \u2014 and some of its most dangerous spies. <\/p>\n<p>\u200bThe Cold War-era structure at West 225th Street in Riverdale \u2014 dubbed the \u201cplex\u201d by some law enforcement officers \u2014 houses scores of Russian officials, some of whom work in the United States as intelligence operatives, vacuuming up information and making key connections in the service of the Kremlin, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/russian-spies-intelligence-officers-new-york-compound-kremlin-ukraine-invasion\">according to a report by Fox News<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to retired FBI special agent Robin Dreeke, some of the neighborhood\u2019s residents are agents of either Russia\u2019s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) or military intelligence agency, the GRU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen secret is a good way to put it,\u201d Dreeke, the former head of the bureau\u2019s Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, told Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>. \u201cI think they think it\u2019s more of a secret than we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the Russian snoops keep tabs on \u201ceverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people think that spies are just going for the high-level classified military infrastructure kind of stuff,\u201d Dreeke said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, \u201cthe real purpose of spying\/intelligence collection is filling information gaps that another country has, and mostly to provide their policymakers and decision-makers the knowledge they need that\u2019s not common knowledge that they can get through legitimate means,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rebekah Koffler, a Russian-born former intelligence officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency, said having agents stationed around the world under diplomatic cover is \u201ca standard procedure\u201d for most nations, including the US.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>According to Koffler, the author of the recent book \u201cPutin\u2019s Playbook,\u201d the spies are focused on amassing as much information as they can with the idea that it may someday provide actionable insights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey collect regardless \u2013 the Russians and the Chinese do \u2013 because that\u2019s just how they do business,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey view us as threat number one,\u201d Koffler added. \u201cAnd sooner or later, they believe that information will be useful, whether it\u2019s for wartime or peacetime, when they want to undermine and somehow cause some kind of disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dreeke told Fox that he spent hours inside the Riverdale compound between 1997 and 2005, when he was part of the FBI\u2019s Russian Military Intelligence Squad. He\u2019s also tried to recruit Russian spies in an effort to neutralize them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said there are two types of intelligence officers. They\u2019re diplomats under diplomatic cover, so they actually have all the privileges of diplomats. So, when they\u2019re caught conducting espionage against our country, you can\u2019t throw them in jail, because they\u2019re diplomats,\u201d Dreeke explained, adding, \u201cNo one likes it. But it\u2019s a fact of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then there are those in the US under a deeper level of cover, working under \u201cfalse pretenses, with fake names\u201d and posing an \u201casymmetrical threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dreeke, some diplomats at the \u201cplex\u201d are not intelligence officers, but there are others who \u201cdo the diplomatic job probably one or two hours a day. And the rest of the day is spent collecting intelligence\u201d that they send back to Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Koffler said the Russian spooks\u2019 M.O. is to try to establish relationships with people the Kremlin believes may be potentially useful sources of information, like government officials.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not like they try to steal your wallet or your purse and get your information that way,\u201d \u200bKoffler\u00a0said. \u201cIt\u2019s called targeteering \u2013 they identify, \u2018OK, we need a list, we need somebody in your State Department,\u2019 or, \u2018We need somebody at the United Nations\u2019 \u2026 and they do their homework and they study\u201d\u200b their mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere does this or that person hang out? Do they play golf, for example? Once they identify who exactly they need, what kind of access, they figure out that person\u2019s patterns of behavior \u2026 they would show up, like, on a tennis court if you are playing tennis. And they would strike \u200bup \u200ba conversation with you and try to be your friend. And you have no idea that you\u2019ve been targeted because it all looks so innocuous and accidental\u200b,\u201d she said. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>Dreeke estimates that as much as 98 percent of the information the agents collect is \u201cbenign,\u201d while the remainder is classified, saying \u200b\u201dit is proprietary [information] that does that greater damage.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
