Could we then make zero deaths possible?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nps.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NPS-Paper-FINAL-1.pdf\">latest research<\/a> by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nps.ai\/\">Neural Propulsion Systems<\/a> (NPS) thinks so. It posits that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new technology can actually enable vehicles to eliminate roadway deaths \u2014 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with or withou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t human supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we\u2019re not talking about a far-off future where super-smart autonomous vehicles\u00a0occupy the roads. No, we\u2019re talking about the here and now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before we get to the tech itself, let\u2019s first go through the basic requirements that would enable this lofty goal:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_three_premises_for_zero_accidents\"><\/span>The three premises for zero accidents<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Roadway users never collide.<\/li>\n<li>Vehicles always stay on the road.<\/li>\n<li>Vehicles always stay upright.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_does_this_require_from_a_vehicle\"><\/span>What does this require from a vehicle?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First off, this means that a car\u2019s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) \u2014 or autonomous tech \u2014 needs to have 100% awareness of its surrounding environment at all times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also means that the vehicle\u2019s vision needs to be highly precise even in the worst conditions, think darkness, fog, buildings, and other obstructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly though, the data collected by the car\u2019s sensors needs, in turn, to be analyzed extremely fast to provide a sufficient safety margin for action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, NPS has calculated that this requires sensing and processing a peak data rate of 100x<span>10\u00b9\u00b2<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0bits per second (100 Terabits per second).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/information-theory\/Physiology\">10 million times greater<\/a> than the sensory data rate our eyes provide to our brains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_kind_of_tech_do_we_need\"><\/span>What kind of tech do we need?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To sense and process the required information we need the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multi-band radar, combining lower-band radar (bigger range, but lower resolution) and higher-band radar (smaller range, but higher resolution) capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solid state LiDAR, which can precisely scan the long-range field of view (FOV).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SoC processors, providing the necessary computing power to process the combined rate of 100 Tb\/sec.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And digital maps, feeding the required road information.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, NPS has included something called \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/1580791\">Atomic Norm<\/a>,\u201d a new mathematical framework, recently discovered by researchers at Caltech and MIT.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company has redeveloped the Atomic Norm into algorithms, tailored specifically for radar, LiDAR detection, and signal processing. As a result, <\/span>it allows massive amounts of data crunching<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enabling the vehicle to sense its surroundings well enough to eradicate roadway deaths \u2014 something it can do without human intervention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_all_these_actually_work\"><\/span>Can all these actually work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, NPS built a pilot-scale prototype platform, consisting of the hardware and software described above, and then tested it at an airfield in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experiments were successful and, according to the company, they proved that 100 Tb\/sec sensing is actually viable.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>In other words, the technology necessary to eliminate road accidents already exists.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, NPS is looking for ways to scale up its product and plans to team up with ADAS and autonomous driving system developers, telematics companies, and government agencies to make zero roadway fatalities a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact we\u2019re even talking about such a thing shows just how impressive technology can be.
