After almost clinching it last year and being nominated for three years, <\/span>Fruits Basket<\/span><\/i> finally won the Anime of the Year title at the 8th Anime Trending Awards! With the victory, the series<\/a> became the first shoujo anime to win the most coveted title at Anime Trending \u2014 and also the first reboot to do so. <\/span>Fruits Basket <\/span><\/i>also won two other awards last night, which includes Couple-Ship of the Year for the series\u2019 main couple, Kyou Souma and Tohru Honda, and Drama Anime of the Year \u2014 which they have won for the second consecutive year. The series placed seventh (among 17 nominees) during its first season in 2019, and finished as a runner-up in the 2020 edition.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement for the series\u2019 win, Director Yoshide Ibata revealed that it was a dream come true for him to work on the anime adaptation, as he read <\/span>Fruits Basket<\/span><\/i> during his junior high school days.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Before the 2019 reboot, <\/span>Fruits Basket<\/span><\/i> was first adapted into an anime series back in 2001 with only 26 episodes and was unable to adapt the rest of the original story. Both TV series are based on the original manga by Natsuki Takaya, which began serialization in 1998. The franchise also has a prequel film titled <\/span>Fruits Basket: Prelude<\/span><\/i>,<\/span> which premiered in Japanese theaters February 18, 2022. The prequel film is centered around the story between the lead female character\u2019s parents, Kyouko and Katsuya Honda.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Though <\/span>86 EIGHTY-SIX <\/span><\/i>did not win the ultimate prize of the night, it still accumulated a total of six awards overall. The series won the inaugural New Anime of the Year award, as it was the highest ranking non-continuing anime among the Anime of the Year nominees. It placed just behind <\/span>Fruits Basket<\/span><\/i> by 534 votes (0.55% of total votes). <\/span>86 EIGHTY-SIX <\/span><\/i>won the<\/span> Best in Adapted Screenplay award while <\/span>Fruits Basket <\/span><\/i>placed in third. Toshiya Ono was in charge of the 86 EIGHTY-SIX<\/em>\u2019 screenplay. He also wrote the screenplay for <\/span>Shadows House<\/span><\/i>, which also got nominated for the same award.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

86 EIGHTY-SIX<\/span><\/i> also won the Best in Soundtrack award with famous composer Hiroyuki Sawano, who was nominated for the same award five times in previous Anime Trending Awards. He also won for Best Ending Theme<\/a> Song for \u201cAvid\u201d and delivered a statement expressing his happiness for receiving the award,\u00a0thanked\u00a0 the staff of <\/span>86 EIGHTY-SIX<\/span><\/i>, and most importantly, spotlighted Kohta Yamamoto, who co-wrote the soundtrack with him. Yamamoto also gave an acceptance statement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Shinei Nouzen is also one of the contributors for <\/span>86 EIGHTY-SIX\u2019<\/span><\/i>s six awards, as he\u00a0won Boy of the Year with a margin of 547 votes over his closest competitor, Izumi Miyamura (<\/span>Horimiya<\/span><\/i>). The \u201cGrim Reaper\u201d previously won Best Boy back in the Fall 2021 Anime Season.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Miko Yotsuya from <\/span>Mieruko-chan <\/span><\/i>was crowned as Girl of the Year for the 8th Anime Trending Awards and had dominated the Fall 2021 season\u2019s weekly female charts for seven consecutive weeks, despite the presence of Shouko Komi from the highly anticipated <\/span>Komi Can\u2019t Communicate<\/span><\/i> adaptation.<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

Nouzen and Yotsuya\u2019s seiyuus also placed high in the selection for Best Voice Actor and Best Voice Actress. Sora Amamiya, Yotsuya\u2019s voice actress, won this year\u2019s Best Voice Actress. This marks her second win since 2014, and she is now tied with Aoi Yuuki for the most number of Best Voice Actress wins. It\u2019s also noted that this is the second consecutive time that a character voiced by Amamiya won as Girl of the Year. Last year, she won with Chizuru Ichinose (<\/span>Rent-a-Girlfriend<\/span><\/i>). Nouzen\u2019s voice actor, Shoya Chiba, placed second for this year\u2019s Best Voice Actor and consequently outstrip<\/a>ped by Yoshimasa Hosoya\u2019s stellar portrayal of the traumatized older Reiner Braun (<\/span>Attack on Titan: The Final Season<\/span><\/i>).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Side characters Levi Ackerman (<\/span>Attack on Titan<\/span><\/i>) and Ram (<\/span>Re:Zero \u2013 Starting Life in Another World<\/span><\/i>) also join in winning this year\u2019s Supporting Boy of the Year and Supporting Girl of the Year, respectively. Ackerman finally won a character award after being nominated three times in past awards for a variety of categories. His first two nominations were for Boy of the Year in 2018 and 2019 where he placed 7th and 4th respectively. This year was a landslide victory for him as he won 16,327 votes over his closest competitor, Ken \u201cDraken\u201d Ryuuguuji (<\/span>Tokyo Revengers<\/span><\/i>) with an overwhelming lead of almost 4,000 votes. Ackerman also managed to beat Otto Suwen (<\/span>Re:Zero \u2212 Starting Life in Another World<\/span><\/i>), who was the defending champion for the award. Ackerman is the third character from <\/span>Attack on Titan<\/span><\/i> who has won a character award alongside Historia Reiss, who won as Supporting Girl of the Year in 2017, and Erwin Smith, who won as Supporting Boy of the Year in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ram\u2019s success as the Supporting Girl of the Year 2021 echoed the footsteps of her younger sister Rem. Rem had secured both Supporting Girl of the Year 2015 and Girl of the Year 2016, thus becoming the only character to have won both the supporting and general<\/a> character award in the history of Anime Trending. Aside from Rem and Ram, two other <\/span>Re:Zero<\/span><\/i> characters managed to secure awards in the Anime Trending Awards, including Echidna as Supporting Girl of the Year in 2020 and Otto Suwen as Supporting Boy of the Year 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s indeed the Year of the (Water) Tiger as romantic-drama anime film <\/span>Josee, The Tiger and The Fish<\/span><\/i> scores an upset win over the film installations of popular anime franchises such as Violet Evergarden and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. <\/span>Josee <\/span><\/i>managed to beat both of the franchises\u2019 movies by nearly a thousand votes. As a stellar addition of the original series, <\/span>Violet Evergarden: The Movie<\/span><\/i> was also nominated for the same award last year and finished as the runner-up behind <\/span>KonoSuba: God\u2019s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson<\/span><\/i>. Meanwhile, <\/span>Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba \u2013 The Movie: Mugen Train<\/span><\/i> smashed Japanese and North American box office records in specific categories between 2020 and 2021. With the background of these two films, many fans expected either title to win the coveted title. With a total of 96,519 votes cast for Anime of the Year, it beat the record-setting 6th Anime Trending Awards, which totaled 69,504 votes.
