owners and players had failed to come up with a new financial agreement in their latest negotiations. The result is that opening day, originally set for March 31, has now been delayed. In fact, the first week of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s has effectively been erased from the schedule. Later, I switched \u00a0my loyalties to the Florida (now Miami) Marlins when I moved to South Florida in the \u201890s. I\u2019m now back in New York and follow both teams fairly closely \u2014 I pay for an MLB TV sub<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion and catch at least a game or two in person each season at the Mets\u2019 Citi Field.<\/p>\n<p>For me, baseball is a much-valued distraction from the troubles of the world. During the pandemic, that has been doubly the case \u2014 to the point I decided to make a pilgrimage to the National Baseball Hall of Fame last summer to celebrate my love for the game.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect I\u2019m no different than most fans in this regard: We need baseball, with its easy pace and endless stats, to forget the real statistics \u2014 say, the number of deaths due to COVID-19. Or now, the number of people killed since Russia invaded Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>So, I was really looking forward to opening day 2022. Instead, I\u2019m living through the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/sports\/nbcsports\/mlb-work-stoppages-history-of-lockouts-strikes-in-baseball\/2976685\/#:~:text=The%20first%20work%20stoppage%20in,ultimately%20relented%20on%20both%20fronts.\" class=\"icon none\">ninth baseball work stoppage<\/a> in my lifetime. No other sport has such a contentious labor history, by my reckoning. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has had four lockouts\/work stoppages. The National Football League (NFL) has had six (I\u2019m not counting labor issues involving NFL referees).<\/p>\n<p>So, what\u2019s the latest baseball battle about? Naturally, money. There are various issues on the table, but the key one involves something called the Competitive Balance Tax \u2014 it\u2019s effectively a form of a salary cap.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that teams going beyond a certain payroll level are hit with what amounts to a \u201cluxury tax,\u201d all in the name of keeping things fair between the big-market clubs with dollars to spare, and the smaller-market ones with less to spend. But by having that payroll \u201ccap,\u201d it means that clubs end up spending less per player on average.  <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>As expected, owners want to cap things as much as possible \u2014 with a threshold that starts at $210 million per club this season (the same figure as it was in 2021, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/mlb-competitive-balance-tax-11646240354?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">according to The Wall Street Journal<\/a>) and increases to $230 million by 2026. The players are pushing for a threshold of $238 million this season, with steady hikes that bring that level to $263 million by 2026. <\/p>\n<p>Most baseball observers side with the players in this latest battle: Baseball scribe R. J. Anderson, for example, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/news\/how-mlbs-luxury-tax-became-a-lockout-sticking-point-and-why-owners-proposal-would-lead-to-drastic-changes\/\" class=\"icon none\">faults the owners<\/a> for their \u201cradical vision,\u201d noting their \u201cunwillingness to relent or to bend toward a more agreeable number\u201d when it comes to the Competitive Balance Tax.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t begrudge anyone the right to make money \u2014 this is capitalist America, after all. But I don\u2019t expect those quibbling over an extra million here and there to win my sympathy.\u201d<span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       But here\u2019s the thing: I\u2019m sure the owners aren\u2019t faultless, but I think fans don\u2019t really care which side is right or wrong, since the money is so ridiculous either way. Keep in mind: The average salary of an MLB player <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.as.com\/en\/2021\/10\/08\/mlb\/1633685987_178363.html#:~:text=According%20to%20recent%20data%2C%20MLB,shows%20a%20totally%20different%20picture.&amp;text=The%20average%20salary%20of%20an,to%20%244.17%20million%20a%20year.\" class=\"icon none\">is $4.17 million<\/a>. (And the minimum was $570,500 last season.) By contrast, the average salary of American workers is around <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2022\/01\/20\/average-american-worker-salary\/6592699001\/\" class=\"icon none\">$51,000 a year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> And the owners? They\u2019re hardly ones to cry poverty. A Forbes study found <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kurtbadenhausen\/2020\/05\/29\/mlb-owners-cry-hardship-while-forbes-shows-8-billion-in-team-profits-since-2010\/?sh=34d20b324669\" class=\"icon none\">they\u2019ve raked in $8 billion in profits<\/a> since 2010. And despite Manfred\u2019s claims that the stock market is a better investment than owning a baseball club, teams are seeing their valuations increase to staggering levels, as MarketWatch\u2019s Weston Blasi reported. Consider my Miami Marlins: They were acquired by Jeffrey Loria in 2002 for $158.5 million and sold by him in 2017 for $1.2 billion. (And this for a team that has often been a baseball laughing stock.)<\/p>\n<p>And this is what I really don\u2019t get: Baseball should be mindful of holding on to the fans it has. The sport, once celebrated as our national pastime, has been in a downward spiral for years. Attendance peaked at nearly 80 million in 2007, but by 2019 \u2014 the last pre-pandemic season \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/majors\/misc.shtml\" class=\"icon none\">it stood at 68 million<\/a>. And TV viewership \u2014 at least for the World <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Series<\/a> \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wikiwand.com\/en\/World_Series_television_ratings#\/Television_ratings_by_year\" class=\"icon none\">is similarly plunging<\/a>, from a peak of nearly 45 million viewers for the championship event in 1978 to around 12 million last year.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying this is all because of the lockouts. In reality, other factors are much more critical \u2014 the slowness of the game, for example. While some of us older fans like the easy pace, let\u2019s face it: Baseball doesn\u2019t provide quite the adrenaline rush of an NBA contest. Indeed, MLB has looked at a host of ways to quicken the game \u2014 for better or worse.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, if a sport is struggling to find an audience \u2014 and I can\u2019t think of a young person I know who is truly excited about baseball in the way I was as a kid \u2014 it\u2019s hard to see how cancelling games is going to improve the situation. At the risk of stating the obvious: You can\u2019t sell America on baseball if you\u2019re not out on the field.<\/p>\n<p>But the truth is owners and players are making money in spite of the slumping attendance and viewership. And they know that most fans will return no matter how long this labor dispute lasts \u2014 after all, we\u2019ve returned following previous strikes.
