This entry picks the best comics to read alongside The Batman.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Two Batman comics always come up when filmmakers are asked about their source material inspiration: <strong>Frank Miller<\/strong> and <strong>Klaus Janson<\/strong>\u2018s <strong><em>The Dark Knight Returns<\/em><\/strong> and Miller and <strong>David Mazzucchelli<\/strong>\u2018s <strong><em>Batman<\/em><\/strong>: <strong><em>Year One<\/em><\/strong>. Released in 1986 and 1987, respectively, they radically altered our perception of Bruce Wayne and nearly eradicated our memory of Adam West\u2019s campy television series. <em>The Dark Knight Returns<\/em> and <em>Year One<\/em> are serious, grim business, and when partnered with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons\u2019 <em>Watchmen<\/em> and Art Spiegelman\u2019s <em>Maus<\/em>, they signaled the medium\u2019s maturation. When Mom, Dad, or Teacher scoffed at your comic book obsession, you could throw these titles in their laps with a loud, \u201cSo, there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new movie<strong><em> The Batman<\/em><\/strong> (2022) doesn\u2019t quite escape their shadow, but when co-writer\/director <strong>Matt Reeves<\/strong> initially sold his take on the character <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FSzDMsJ-fIA\">to the DC Fandome audience<\/a>, he purposefully avoided their mention. Instead, he took the opportunity to celebrate an underrated Batman short story. In his movie, as Reeves explained it, \u201c[Batman] is broken\u2026[he\u2019s] driven by the parts of himself he doesn\u2019t yet know, that sort of psychological Jungian shadow side. That sort of version is very much connected to the vision from <strong>Darwyn Cooke<\/strong>\u2018s <strong><em>Ego<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shockingly, when you watch Reeves\u2019 Batman movie, you will actually not see much, if any, influence from <em>The Dark Knight Returns<\/em>. But you will see <em>Year One<\/em>, and you will see <em>Ego,<\/em> and you will see glimpses from a few other tales as well. Starring\u00a0<strong>Robert Pattinson <\/strong>as the titular superhero,\u00a0<em>The Batman<\/em> is a coming-of-age procedural featuring a Caped Crusader stumbling through his vengeance vow. Bruce Wayne does not have it all figured out, and if you find this unassured version <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ealing, I\u2019ve gone ahead and assembled an appropriate comic book reading list for your pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>DC Comics has your first leg on this journey already covered. The first three titles below\u00a0were recently assembled into a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/707163\/the-batman-box-set-by-jeph-loeb\/\">collector\u2019s box edition<\/a>, hoping to catch some sales off <em>The Batman<\/em>. The rest you\u2019ll have to hunt for, but it should be easy, as all are currently on sale for reasonable prices both physically and digitally. Beyond the first three comics, I\u2019ve arranged them according to my preference and how well they connect with Matt Reeves\u2019 movie.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Batman_Year_One\"><\/span>Batman: Year One<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"has-credit-line\">\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-370508\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-Year-One-Comics.jpg\" alt=\"Batman Year One Comics\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-Year-One-Comics.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-Year-One-Comics-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                        <span class=\"sf-entry-flag sf-entry-flag-creditline\">DC Comics<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code>            &lt;\/figure&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>It\u2019s in the title. This comic book explores Bruce Wayne during his first days under the cape and cowl. He hasn\u2019t mastered his skills yet, not as a detective, not as a combatant, and not as a friend to Gotham. But he\u2019s trying. He\u2019s trying really damn hard.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli approach<strong> <em>Batman: Year One<\/em> <\/strong>with an uncompromising earnestness. Their Gotham City is Hell on Earth, festering with corruption, poverty, and despair. In this light, a Batman vigilante makes total sense. Only madness can fight madness.<\/p>\n<p>What folks sometimes forget is how <em>Year One<\/em> is as much Jim Gordon\u2019s story as it is Bruce Wayne\u2019s. The detective is at the end of his rope. His marriage is failing, and his job threatens to poison his soul. When Batman enters his life, his purpose is reinvigorated, and the two men feed off each other. This relationship is also very much at <em>The Batman<\/em>\u2018s core, with Jeffrey Wright as Gordon.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Batman_The_Long_Halloween\"><\/span>Batman: The Long Halloween<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"has-credit-line\">\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-370506\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Long-Halloween.jpg\" alt=\"The Long Halloween\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Long-Halloween.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Long-Halloween-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                        <span class=\"sf-entry-flag sf-entry-flag-creditline\">DC Comics<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code>            &lt;\/figure&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Set a short time after <em>Year One<\/em>,\u00a0<em><strong>Batman:<\/strong><\/em><strong> <em>The Long Halloween<\/em><\/strong> opens at a wedding, with Bruce Wayne telling mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro\u2019s role in <em>The Batman<\/em>) that he \u201cbelieves in Gotham City.\u201d You only need a passing notion of <em>The Godfather<\/em> to spot its sway. The billionaire playboy refuses to launder money for the criminal, and the rejection ignites a cataclysmic murder spree over the course of 13 months, from one October to the next.<\/p>\n<p>Who is killing the goons and politicians of Gotham? The mystery thrusts Batman through his entire rogue\u2019s gallery, putting us in close contact with Joker, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Penguin, Scarecrow, and the rest. Authors <strong>Jeph Loeb<\/strong> and <strong>Tim Sale<\/strong> weave a compelling mystery, dropping clues that the reader could assemble into an answer if they are up to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Long Halloween<\/em> is the comic I often give to those curious about Batman. It\u2019s a tour through Bruce Wayne\u2019s psychology as well as Gotham City\u2019s most notorious. Every villain gets a moment to shine while showcasing how the ultimate evil always spreads from the selfish money men perched on their ivory towers.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Batman<\/em>\u2018s mystery certainly cribs from <em>The Long Halloween<\/em> without stealing it. The relationships between Batman, Catwoman (Zo\u00eb Kravitz), and Falcone are lifted straight from this tale as well. But the Dark Knight in the new movie lacks the confidence of his <em>Long Halloween<\/em> counterpart. <em>The Batman<\/em>\u2018s Bruce Wayne has his origins in the next comic on the list.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Batman_Ego\"><\/span>Batman: Ego<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"has-credit-line\">\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-370504\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-EGO.jpg\" alt=\"Batman Ego\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-EGO.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-EGO-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                        <span class=\"sf-entry-flag sf-entry-flag-creditline\">DC Comics<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code>            &lt;\/figure&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Darwyn Cooke is a legendary creator, and if you are into comics at all, you should seek out every story he\u2019s ever worked on. His version of the Justice League, as seen in <em>The New Frontier<\/em> is the definitive take on the characters. His adaptations of Richard Stark\u2019s Parker novels are better than John Boorman\u2019s <em>Point Blank<\/em>,\u00a0Brian Helgeland <em>Payback<\/em>, and\u00a0Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s <em>Made in the USA<\/em> combined. He is a master cartoonist who helped shape <em>Batman<\/em>: <em>The Animated Series<\/em>, <em>Batman Beyond<\/em>, and the <em>Men in Black<\/em> children\u2019s show.<\/p>\n<p>His <strong><em>Ego<\/em><\/strong> is a tiny tale tracking Batman during one of the worst days of his life. And that sure as hell is saying something. Before the comic begins, Joker has murdered 27 civilians. The getaway driver Batman manhandled into snitching is on the run, and a wounded Dark Knight is in pursuit. Before Batman can capture him, the wheelman offs himself. The death renders Bruce Wayne into two separate entities: the masquerading man playing vigilante and the Bat-Monster thirsting for revenge.<\/p>\n<p>As Batman bleeds to death, we enter his mindscape and encounter a crumbling failure. Bruce Wayne must defend himself from his darkest desires. Somewhere along his journey to justice, he lost his purpose, his need to help those who cannot help themselves. His fear and anger became hate. Emotions that were once tools are now perverted into toxic aggression. He must reclaim mastery over his monster.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Catwoman_When_in_Rome\"><\/span>Catwoman: When in Rome<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"has-credit-line\">\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-370505\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Catwoman-When-in-Rome.jpg\" alt=\"Catwoman When In Rome\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Catwoman-When-in-Rome.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Catwoman-When-in-Rome-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                        <span class=\"sf-entry-flag sf-entry-flag-creditline\">DC Comics<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code>            &lt;\/figure&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Another tale from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. <strong><em>Catwoman<\/em><\/strong>: <strong><em>When in Rome<\/em><\/strong> leaves Gotham City and Batman behind, dropping the reader into Catwoman\u2019s morally gray perspective. Set shortly after <em>The Long Halloween<\/em> and its sequel <strong><em>Dark Victory<\/em><\/strong>, <em>When in Rome<\/em> follows Selina Kyle and The Riddler to Italy, where they get up to no good with the Falcone crime family.<\/p>\n<p>This comic is a slick, noirish story that frees Catwoman to be her own person away from the Dark Knight\u2019s popularity. Like Bruce, however, her pain is a family pain, and whatever interest you gain from their portrayal in <em>The Batman<\/em> will be fully satisfied here. The answers are obvious but tragically rewarding.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Batman_Zero_Year\"><\/span>Batman: Zero Year<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"has-credit-line\">\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-370509\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-Zero-Year.jpg\" alt=\"Batman Zero Year\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-Zero-Year.jpg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Batman-Zero-Year-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                        <span class=\"sf-entry-flag sf-entry-flag-creditline\">DC Comics<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code>            &lt;\/figure&gt;&lt;\/p&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Decades removed from <em>Year One<\/em>\u2018s publication, <strong>Scott Snyder<\/strong> and <strong>Greg Capullo<\/strong> attempt their own origin story with <strong><em>Batman:<\/em> <em>Zero Year<\/em><\/strong>. Set during Batman\u2019s early period, Gotham City falls into ruins after The Riddler detonates the reservoir, flooding the city. In the wasteland, Bruce Wayne grapples with his vigilante intention. He\u2019s molded himself into a perfect crime-fighting specimen, but he could not have possibly predicted an apocalypse such as this. Can he save the city alone?<\/p>\n<p><em>The Batman<\/em> positions The Riddler as a nightmarish psychopath. If Frank Gorshin and\u00a0Jim Carrey are your references for the character, the new Paul Dano iteration will knock you back a bit. <em>Zero Year<\/em> helped redefine the gimmicky crook as a genuine threat, exposing proper motivation within his insanity. He achieves what many of his more popular co-workers could not imagine.
