The surge in crypto industry lobbying last year was given some concrete parameters in February by crypto analytics startup Crypto Head. It <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptohead.com\/crypto-lobbying\/\">released<\/a> a report showing that the crypto companies that spent the most money on lobbying in 2021 were Robinhood, Ripple Labs, Coinbase and the Blockchain Association. These organizations were the lobbying leaders during the past five years as well, although with different rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what the United States crypto-lobbying landscape looks like today.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Metrics_of_influence\"><\/span>Metrics of influence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Robinhood spent $1.35 million on lobbying in 2021 and was the only crypto-related organization to spend more than $1 million. Ripple Labs, in second place, spent $900,000. The Economist<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/finance-and-economics\/crypto-lobbying-is-going-ballistic\/21806674\"> estimated<\/a> a total of $5 million was spent by crypto firms on lobbying in the first three quarters of 2021. <\/p>\n<p>To put this in perspective, the highest-spending lobbying group in the U.S. in 2020, the National Association of Realtors, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/all-profiles\">spent<\/a> $84.11 million according to the nonprofit Open Secrets, which provided the data for the Crypto Head report. <\/p>\n<p>Blockchain Association executive director Kristin Smith said in an email to Cointelegraph that \u201cSpending is only one metric of influence, and these roundups do not often provide context on the effectiveness of dollars spent.\u201d Smith noted the Crypto Head report \u201cmixes companies with different focuses, multi-member trade associations and other entities, making a one-to-one comparison difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith said education is the top priority of her organization. She told Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> last year, \u201cOur number-one priority is helping [Treasury Secretary Janet] Yellen understand crypto goes beyond the financing of criminal enterprises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crypto industry was not alone in lobbying for cryptocurrency. The National Football League spent $600,000 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/11\/nfl-lobbies-the-sec-on-blockchain-technology.html\">lobbying<\/a> Congress, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other government agencies in 2021 with the goal of determining \u201cwhether crypto can be an integral part of the League\u2019s business,\u201d according to CNBC sources. In February, former presidential candidate Andrew Yang launched Lobby3, a decentralized autonomous organization that will<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewYang\/status\/1494295220023971845?s=20&amp;t=-ZvmBrqbGsjlqk3CLS4Gcg\"> lobby<\/a> for Web3 and the eradication of poverty. <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Revolvers_at_work\"><\/span>Revolvers at work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Crypto Head noted the presence of \u201crevolvers\u201d in the ranks of cryptocurrency industry lobbyists, defining revolvers as \u201cgovernment regulators, congressional staff or members of Congress who take jobs in lobbying firms, making the most of their insider knowledge.\u201d The narrative became richer in February with the<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/crypto-industry-amasses-washington-insiders-lobbying-blitz-intensifies\"> release<\/a> of the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) report \u201cCrypto Industry Amasses Washington Insiders as Lobbying Blitz Intensifies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The TTP report documents the presence of \u201ctwo former chairs of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), two former chairs of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and one former chairman of the Senate Finance Committee,\u201d other former legislators and staffers of various sorts for a total of \u201cnearly 240 examples of officials with key positions in the White House, Congress, federal regulatory agencies, and national political campaigns moving to and from the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the employment of revolvers is common practice in many industries, and not only for lobbying, TTP saw a potential conflict of interest in movement from the industry into government. Specifically, five \u201cformer top executives at Circle Internet Financial,\u201d operator of the stablecoin USD Coin (USDC), have joined the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston \u201ceven as the firm is seeking a bank charter from the Fed.\u201d The Boston Fed is also taking part in the Project Hamilton research on a digital dollar.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crypto_PACs\"><\/span>Crypto PACs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Political action committees (PACs) give the crypto industry another opportunity to influence the political process, and there has been a flurry of organizations on that front as well. The American Blockchain PAC was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/politico-influence\/2021\/11\/12\/lobbyist-launches-effort-to-send-crypto-friendly-politicians-to-washington-798868\">founded<\/a> in November with the goal of raising $300 million for pro-crypto candidates. However, it was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessofbusiness.com\/articles\/crypto-super-pacs-are-coming-to-disrupt-politics\/\">reported<\/a> in mid-February to have raised less than $8,000 so far. <\/p>\n<p>In January, the $10-million Democratic Protect Our Future PAC was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/minutes\/congress\/01-27-2022\/new-pac-launches\/\">created<\/a>, and donors include FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. The Gonna Make It (GMI) PAC<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/investing\/cryptos-personalities-take-a-page-out-of-an-old-political-book\"> launched<\/a> the same month with backing from former Donald Trump communications director Anthony Scaramucci, with a tweet <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gmipac\/status\/1487062884303523843\">declaring<\/a>, \u201cWhen we organize, when we mobilize, we are unstoppable. We are GMI PAC, a super PAC that will elect pro-crypto candidates in federal races across the country.\u201d It intends to raise $20 million.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase launched its second attempt at a PAC in February.
