Keanu Reeves<\/strong> is everywhere these days. With the actor enjoying a career resurgence thanks to the\u00a0John Wick<\/em> films and a string of charming cameos, you would think that Reeves would be too busy to take a trip<\/a> down memory lane. But lo and behold, Reeves is returning to not one, but two, major properties that helped launch him to fame. But it\u2019s more than nostalgia that brought Reeves back to\u00a0the Matrix<\/em><\/strong> series<\/a>. Reeves explained exactly why he has returned in\u00a0The Matrix 4<\/em><\/strong>, 17 years after\u00a0The Matrix Revolutions<\/em> seemingly wrapp<\/a>ed up the sci-fi trilogy.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Empire, Reeves explained that once he read Lana Wachowski<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cbeautiful\u201d script, he had to come back to star in\u00a0The Matrix 4<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cLana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me. That\u2019s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It\u2019s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lana and Lily Wachowski seemed to have achieved everything they set out to do with the groundbreaking sci-fi action trilogy of\u00a0The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded,<\/em> and\u00a0The Matrix Revolutions<\/em>. What more story could you tell for Neo (who died in Revolutions<\/em>)? At least one more film\u2019s worth \u2013 and one that brings back other major characters, with\u00a0Carrie-Ann Moss<\/strong>\u00a0also returning as Trinity. In the Empire article, Moss agreed with Reeves\u2019 praise of the script, adding that though she was surprised that a fourth\u00a0Matrix <\/em>film could be made, she jumped at the chance to return.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought that it would happen,\u201d Moss said. \u201cIt was never on my radar at all. When it was brought to me in the way that it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, \u2018This is a gift.\u2019 It was just very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Matrix 4<\/em>\u00a0is being directed by\u00a0Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote the script with\u00a0David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. Original franchise cast members\u00a0Keanu Reeves,\u00a0Carrie-Anne Moss, and\u00a0Jada Pinkett Smith<\/strong>\u00a0are all set to return, with new cast members including\u00a0Priyanka Chopra<\/strong>,\u00a0Jessica Henwick<\/strong>,\u00a0Neil Patrick Harris<\/strong>,\u00a0Toby Onwumere<\/strong>,\u00a0Brian J. Smith<\/strong>,\u00a0Er\u00e9ndira Ibarra<\/strong>,\u00a0Andrew Caldwell<\/strong>, and\u00a0Yahya Abdul-Mateen II<\/strong>. There\u2019s still no word if original series star\u00a0Laurence Fishburne<\/strong>\u00a0is coming back, and rumor has it that\u00a0Abdul-Mateen is playing a younger version of Fishburne\u2019s character Morpheus. Beyond that, plot details remain a secret.<\/p>\n

The Matrix 4<\/em>\u00a0is still set for a\u00a0May 21, 2021<\/strong>\u00a0release date.<\/p>\n
