And while the bottles were popping at Vibe magazine\u2019s post-Soul Train Awards party in Los Angeles, he was trying to convince DJ Clark Kent to be his spinning sidekick across the pond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was like, \u2018Yo, you gotta go on the road with me. We gonna go to London for this new album,\u2019 \u201d Kent \u2014 who at the time was senior vice president of A&amp;R at Motown Records \u2014\u00a0told The Post. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Man, you know I got a job.\u2019 But he was like, \u2018I\u2019m going to London and you\u2019re coming with me.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the two never made that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>: After leaving the party at the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.petersen.org\">Petersen Automotive Museum<\/a>, the Notorious B.I.G., a k a Biggie Smalls, was killed at the age of 24 in a drive-by shooting while sitting <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/03\/04\/suv-that-biggie-rode-in-when-he-was-shot-worth-1-5m\/\">in his GMC Suburban<\/a>. And then I go to the party, and he\u2019s there. I\u2019m like, \u2018What the f \u2013 \u2013 k?\u2019 Because in my mind, I was like, \u2018Dog, stay out the way.\u2019 I wanted him to stay out the way because, to me, the tension was there . . . I just didn\u2019t even necessarily feel like he should have been in LA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But after making just two studio albums in his career \u2014 with only one, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLhWNDVRwYT0c7Y83IteKhjMTJxWTrwe9K\">his classic 1994 debut \u201cReady To Die,\u201d<\/a> released in his lifetime\u00a0 \u2014 the legacy of the Notorious B.I.G. still lives large a quarter century later. In fact, he became only the second solo rapper inducted into the Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. That\u2019s an astonishing thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>**********************************************************<\/p>\n<p>Born Christopher Wallace in Brooklyn, the Notorious B.I.G. had buzz in the underground New York hip-hop scene before he was signed to Sean \u201cPuffy\u201d Combs\u2019 Bad Boy Records. Easy Mo Bee, who was a producer on both \u201cReady To Die\u201d and \u201cLife After Death,\u201d had already heard Biggie\u2019s demo\u00a0before he met with the rapper to work on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rEaPDNgUPLE\">\u201cParty &amp; Bulls \u2013 \u2013 t\u201d<\/a> for the 1993 \u201cWho\u2019s the Man?\u201d soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first impression of him, of course, was [of] this big fat dude,\u201d said Easy Mo Bee. \u201cI began to wonder in my mind, like, \u2018How is the public gonna receive him?\u2019 But once those lyrics came out, that just took over everything. His lyrics superseded any thoughts that you could have of, \u2018Could he succeed?\u2019 His lyrical prowess stood out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And in addition to his mastery of language, imagery and storytelling, Light believes that Biggie\u2019s delivery was as dope as it gets. \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/donaldharrison.com\/big-chief-donald-harrison\">Donald Harrison<\/a>, that great jazz saxophone player, was his next-door neighbor, and they would sit and listen and kind of study jazz records together,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you can hear that in the way that his delivery bounces across bars. He just didn\u2019t love the song like that. But he began to understand the power of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>**********************************************************<\/p>\n<p>Not only did \u201cReady To Die\u201d go six-times platinum and im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely establish Biggie as a major new player in the hip-hop <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, but it gave West Coast rappers some real competition from the East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a time when certainly the commercial center of gravity had shifted to California,\u201d said Light. \u201cYou\u2019re talking about the pinnacle of [Dr.] Dre and G-funk and that stuff really overpowering where the audience was going.\u201d And Biggie was \u201csomebody who could shift the focus back to more of a New York aesthetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the Notorious B.I.G. was the prize prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of Combs \u2014 who was in a well-publicized feud with West Coast rap kingpin and Death Row Records founder Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight \u2014 Light said, \u201cIt does feel like he gets kind of sucked into this story.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/biggie-mural.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"The Notorious B.I.G. mural in Brooklyn\" class=\"wp-image-21420822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/biggie-mural.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/biggie-mural.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/biggie-mural.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Notorious B.I.G. mural near the corner of Bedford Avenue and Quincy Street in Brooklyn.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Gregory P. Mango<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Kent insists that there was no East Coast-West Coast beef from Biggie\u2019s side. \u201cHe ain\u2019t have nothin\u2019 to do with what happened to \u2019Pac,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was just terrible \u2014 all of the s \u2013 \u2013 t was lies. So he got lied on, and then the s \u2013 \u2013 t just went the way that it went. It was f \u2013 \u2013 ked up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the Notorious B.I.G. gave California some love on the \u201cLife After Death\u201d track <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_JZom_gVfuw\">\u201cGoing Back to Cali\u201d<\/a>: \u201cY\u2019all n \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 \u2013 s is a mess\/Thinkin\u2019 I\u2019m gon\u2019 stop givin\u2019 LA props\/All I got is beef with those that violate me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, that LA trip would prove to be fateful \u2014 and fatal \u2014 for Biggie. And there have been various conspiracy theories surrounding his murder. So we\u2019re not knowing that they\u2019re shooting at his car. So we get all the way to the party and then my phone\u2019s ringing like, \u2018Yo, your man got shot.\u2019 I just walked out the party and went right to the hospital. It was bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> as soon as I got there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>**********************************************************<\/p>\n<p>Easy Mo Bee recalls that the last time he saw Biggie was when he and another Brooklyn hip-hop legend, Jay-Z, were in the studio working on the \u201cLife After Death\u201d track <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yi5iNWYfklI\">\u201cI Love the Dough.\u201d<\/a> They were writing in their heads for the song,\u201d he said of the two rappers, neither of whom ever wrote anything down. \u201cAnd then he told me, \u2018Me and Jigga, we\u2019re gonna step out. We\u2019ll be right back.\u2019 Those were his exact last words. And they went out, and they took too long to come back. Certainly, the two MCs were already pushing each other on the mic. \u201cThis was a time where the culture was opening up so much more to hip-hop and to possibilities for these kinds of stars for whatever other things he might have wanted to pursue, musically or otherwise,\u201d said Light, who now co-hosts SiriusXM Volume\u2019s \u201cDebatable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that was taken so soon and so early on that you have to think about what else was possible. I mean, certainly, when you look at Jay Z\u2019s career \u2014 everything that that\u2019s become above and beyond the music \u2014\u00a0you have to think: Where would Biggie have been able to head with more time?\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
