But ideas such as food vouchers and parking discounts are mostly being proposed by city councils and CBD businesses keen to get their old customers back.<\/p>\n<p>A wide range of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com.au\/digitalpulse\/report-future-of-work-hybrid-working.html\">surveys<\/a> over the past 18 months show most employees and increasingly employers have no desire to return to commuting five days a week.<\/p>\n<p>The seismic shift in employer attitudes is signaled by Google, long a fierce opponent of working from home.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/google-wants-employees-to-return-to-the-office-on-april-4th-204334929.html\">company told employees<\/a> they must return to the office from early April \u2013 but only for three days a week.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s still way more than tech companies such as Australia\u2019s Atlassian, which expects workers to come into the office <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com.au\/atlassian-wfh-policy-2021-4\">just four days a year<\/a>, but it is a far cry from its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/no-telecommuting-allowed-why-is-google-investing-billions-of-dollars-in-office-buildings\/\">pre-pandemic resistance<\/a> to remote work.<\/p>\n<p>Hybrid work is here to stay. Employers will either embrace the change or find themselves being left behind.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gains_in_productivity\"><\/span>Gains in productivity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google began \u2013 under pressure \u2013 to soften its opposition to remote work in 2020. In December of that year chief executive Sundar Pichai <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/insights.dice.com\/2020\/12\/15\/google-ceo-sundar-pichai-embraces-flexible-work-for-employees\/\">told employees<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are testing a hypothesis that a flexible work model will lead to greater productivity, collaboration, and well-being.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Its chief concern has been protecting the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> capital that springs from physical proximity \u2013 and also perhaps with keeping employers under surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>But longstanding (and widespread) management concerns that employees working from home would lower productivity have proven unfounded.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the pandemic, there was good research showing no productivity penalty from remote working \u2013 the opposite, in fact.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a 2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/qje\/article-abstract\/130\/1\/165\/2337855?login=false\">randomized trial<\/a> involving about 250 Shanghai call center workers found working from home associated with 13% more productivity. This comprised a 9% gain from working more minutes per shift \u2013 due perhaps to fewer interruptions \u2013 and a 4% gain from making more calls per minute \u2013 attributed to a quieter, more comfortable working environment.<\/p>\n<p>Research in the past two years supports these findings.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard Business School professor Raj Choudury and colleagues published <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/smj.3251?casa_token=npZMGbpthiUAAAAA%3Aa06OG9xsW5_KwBqMDGtPlDoIGpe_M9z-wwqC8ONBAMEKVPbNBpfYtoZXnZDmZ7m5jk1bb_BC_dd1Hg\">research<\/a> in October 2020 that found allowing employees to work wherever they like led to a 4.4% increase in output.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2021, Stanford University economist Nick Bloom and colleagues calculated the shift to remote working resulted in a 5% productivity boost. Though their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w28731\">working paper<\/a>, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, was not peer-reviewed, it was based on surveying 30,000 American workers, which is a decent sample size.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our_relationship_with_work_has_changed\"><\/span>Our relationship with work has changed<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are good reasons most of us don\u2019t want to go back to the old normal. It just wasn\u2019t that great.<\/p>\n<p>While working from home can bring challenges of other kinds, not least the ability to switch off and stop working when work is done, working in an office can increase stress, lower mood, and reduce productivity.<\/p>\n<p>My own research has measured the effects of typical <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/open-plan-office-noise-increases-stress-and-worsens-mood-weve-measured-the-effects-162843\">open-plan office noises<\/a>, finding a 25% increase in negative mood even after a short exposure time.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the time spent commuting. Not having to go into the office every day frees up hours of time to do other things. Increasing numbers of people are rejecting the idea of pursuing a career at all costs.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t want to spend their life being a cog in the wheel of capitalism and are choosing to work less \u2013 even not at all.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_one_size_fits_all\"><\/span>No one size fits all<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rather than a bastion of meaning and fulfillment, the structures around how we have conducted work has for many people meant an existence of quiet desperation. The pandemic has brought an unforeseen opportunity to change this narrative and rethink both the way we work and the role of work in our lives<\/p>\n<p>For some, no job is better than a bad job. The rest of us will settle for the flexibility we\u2019ve had over the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>No one size fits all. The downsides of working from home include missing coworkers and losing the benefits of serendipitous conversations. The nuances of how much time we need to spend together in the office for outcomes like creativity, belonging, learning, and relationship building varies between individuals, teams, and job types.<\/p>\n<p>But what is certain is we don\u2019t need to be together five days a week to make these things h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en.
