Bob Fife has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobertFife\/status\/1501007005242249216\">a copy of the invitation<\/a> to the launch. It will be in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kheiriddin out:\u00a0<\/strong>Earlier Monday,\u00a0journalist <strong>Tasha Kheiriddin,\u00a0<\/strong>who had been considering a run, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TashaKheiriddin\/status\/1500979193370324999?s=20&amp;t=_1KiGIjDuu7foECHtFB2Ew\">announced<\/a>\u00a0that she would instead throw her support behind Charest. The <em>Post<\/em>, where she used to columnize, has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/tasha-kheiriddin-wont-be-running-for-cpc-leadership-will-support-jean-charest-instead\">the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong>, widely seen as the odds-on favourite, is unlikely to welcome Charest, who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PierrePoilievre\/status\/1500921304114814977?s=20&amp;t=Ei4dUCyXsc-O1W1Q36A9yA\">he attacked on Twitter<\/a> on Monday. CP has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/poilievre-s-team-takes-aim-at-charest-s-conservative-cred-as-his-campaign-takes-shape-1.5809478\">a good roundup<\/a>\u00a0of the state of the race.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baggage:<\/strong> In <em>Le Journal de Montr\u00e9al<\/em>, <strong>Richard Martineau<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2022\/03\/07\/jean-charest-et-dune\">reminds readers<\/a>\u00a0that while Charest was premier of Quebec, there was an \u201cunhealthy promiscuity\u201d between Liberals and certain big-spending engineering firms (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www-journaldemontreal-com.translate.goog\/2022\/03\/07\/jean-charest-et-dune?_x_tr_sl=fr&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-US&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp\">translation<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lurking?<\/strong> In the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Stephanie Levitz<\/strong> takes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2022\/03\/07\/will-stephen-harper-meddle-in-the-conservative-leadership-race-insiders-say-contest-is-reviving-old-rivalries-and-divided-loyalties.html\">an in-depth look<\/a> at the personal dynamics at play in the CPC race, including the role that a certain former prime minister may play.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Former party leader and Conservative prime minister <strong>Stephen Harper<\/strong>, for instance, has been\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/actualites\/politique\/2022-02-23\/possible-candidature-de-jean-charest\/stephen-harper-veut-un-vrai-conservateur-a-la-tete-du-parti.php\">sending signals\u00a0<\/a>he\u2019s not willing to take a back seat if former Progressive Conservative leader Jean Charest runs. The two interacted often when Harper was prime minister and Charest was premier of Quebec, where <strong>he harshly criticized Harper often<\/strong> and in particular, during the 2008 election in which the federal Conservatives again failed to secure a majority. How exactly Harper will engage in this leadership contest is unclear, two sources close to him told the <em>Star<\/em>, but what is certain, they said, is that he will be motivated by a <strong>desire to ensure a \u201ctrue Conservative\u201d wins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\"><strong>Pressure for defence spending:<\/strong> In London on Monday, at the start of a five-day European <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to support Ukraine, <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> defended Canada\u2019s low level of defence spending, acknowledging the \u201c<strong>context is changing rapidly<\/strong> around the world,\u201d the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-prime-minister-justin-trudeau-defends-canadas-military-spending-below\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">Trudeau made his comments at a joint press conference with with <strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong> and Dutch Prime Minister <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\">The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has a defence spending target of 2 per cent of GDP for its 30 member countries. Canada lags the vast majority, placing fifth-last in defence spending at 1.39 per cent of GDP, as of 2021, according to NATO estimates. Britain spent 2.29 per cent of GDP on defence last year, according to the same estimates. Mr. Johnson said he wouldn\u2019t comment on Canada\u2019s military budget but noted that Britain\u2019s is much higher. \u201cI\u2019m not going to make any comment on Canada\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach except to say this: I do think that the world has clearly changed. And I think that what we can\u2019t do post the invasion of Ukraine is assume that we can go back to a kind of status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Russian oil:<\/strong> Trudeau, Johnson and Rutte were also asked about replacing Russian petroleum, the <em>Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/trudeau-pledges-support-for-european-nations-looking-to-move-away-from-russian-energy\">reports<\/a>. Conservative critics have blamed Trudeau for making it more difficult to build pipelines to export Canadian petroleum, and called for Canadian products to be exported to replace Russian petroleum. In his remarks, Trudeau emphasized alternatives to oil: \u201cWe will be there to support, as the world moves beyond Russian oil and indeed, beyond fossil fuels, to have more renewables in our mix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Latvian market?<\/strong> The ambassador from Latvia said Monday he would welcome Canadian LNG, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-latvia-wants-canadian-natural-gas-imports-to-reduce-reliance-on-russia\/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+\/+Media&amp;utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian threats:<\/strong> Russia threatened Monday to cut off natural gas exports, Reuters <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/russia-threatens-to-close-main-gas-pipeline-to-europe-as-the-west-ramps-up-sanctions?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1646695965\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wheat up:<\/strong> Canadians may be spending more for groceries as a result of the war in Ukraine, the <em>Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/commodities\/agriculture\/grocery-bills-heading-higher-as-ukraine-conflict-continues\/wcm\/477319e1-6184-47ea-84a7-b80fa71f0b9c\">reports<\/a>. The war has \u201cdisrupted grain exports from the Black Sea region, putting stark upward pressures on wheat, corn, sunflower seeds, and legumes like pulses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Out on bail:<\/strong> Convoy organizer <strong>Tamara Lich<\/strong> got bail on Monday, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/freedom-convoy-leader-tamara-lich-to-be-released-from-custody-1.5807941\">reports<\/a>. Lich was released on $25,000 in bonds and must leave Ottawa within 24 hours and Ontario within 72 hours. Lich, who has been locked up since Feb. 17, is charged with counselling to commit mischief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kenney cuts gas tax:<\/strong> <strong>Jason Kenney<\/strong> announced Monday that the province would drop its 13-cents-a-litre gas tax. In the <em>Herald<\/em>, Don Braid <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/opinion\/columnists\/braid-tax-breaks-reflect-an-economic-puzzle-for-other-canadians\">explains<\/a> that he can afford to do that.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Almost singlehandedly, the oil surge erased last year\u2019s original estimate of an $18-billion deficit, turning it into a balanced budget with an estimated $500 million surplus. That\u2019s with this year\u2019s oil price estimated at $70 per barrel.
