Nia DaCosta<\/strong> is taking the helm for\u00a0Captain Marvel 2<\/em><\/strong>. The director of the highly anticipated\u00a0Candyman<\/em> reboot has been tapp<\/a>ed by Marvel Studios to direct\u00a0Captain Marvel 2<\/em>, making her the first-ever Black female director for a Marvel movie.<\/p>\n

Deadline broke the news<\/a> that Nia DaCosta, director of the acclaimed drama\u00a0Little Woods<\/em> and the upcoming\u00a0Candyman<\/em> reboot,<\/em> has been tapped to helm the sequel to\u00a0Captain Marvel<\/em>. DaCosta will be taking the reins from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who wrote and directed the first\u00a0Captain Marvel<\/em> film starring\u00a0Brie Larson<\/strong> as the titular Marvel superhero. Disney and Marvel Studios had no comment, according to Deadline.<\/p>\n

DaCosta \u201cseemed to have the edge\u201d over several individuals that the studio met with, Deadline reports. And with the filmmaker\u2019s star rising with the hype for the Jordan Peele-produced\u00a0Candyman<\/em>, it seems like that tipped her over the edge. DaCosta broke out with the 2018 indie\u00a0Little Woods<\/em>, a heartbreaking neo-Western starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James, and would soon be tapped to helm the new version of\u00a0Candyman<\/em>, which is building buzz for its strong sociopolitical approach to the horror genre. But DaCosta\u2019s work on\u00a0Little Woods<\/em> is often overlooked \u2014 a haunting slow-burner, it beautifully depicts a troubled sister relationship amid America\u2019s ongoing opioid crisis. That kind of strong character writing can only help with\u00a0Captain Marvel<\/em>, a movie that hit all the beats of the Marvel formula but fell a little flat on the character (and action) front.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0Captain Marvel 2<\/em>, DaCosta joins the elite group of female filmmakers like Chloe Zhao, Cathy Yan, and Patty Jenkins who are helming superhero tentpoles, as well as the even more elite group of Black filmmakers directing comic book movies<\/a> (a group that includes Black Panther<\/em>\u2018s Ryan Coogler and\u00a0The Old Guard<\/em>\u2018s Prince-Bythewood). But DaCosta is in a league of her own as the first-ever Black female director to helm a Marvel movie, and all eyes will likely be on her as she steps into the director\u2019s chair for\u00a0Captain Marvel 2<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Megan McDonnell, a story editor on the Marvel-based series\u00a0WandaVision<\/em>, has penned the script for the\u00a0Captain Marve<\/em>l sequel, for which Larson is set to reprise her role as Carol Danvers. The first\u00a0Captain Marvel<\/em>, which starred Larson as a human searching for her identity who gets involved in the war between the two alien races, the Kree and the shape-shifting Skrulls,\u00a0hit theaters in 2018 and grossed $1.128\u00a0billion at the worldwide box office.<\/p>\n

Captain Marvel 2<\/em> is\u00a0scheduled for release on July 8, 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
