Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved a plan to test the insects.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped the new altered mosquitoes will ward off their natural, disease-causing counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Bio<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> company Oxitec has developed altered Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which have been genetically modified so that males, which do not bite, are released into the wild and mate with females, which\u00a0do bite.<\/p>\n<p>Their offspring, either male or female, never survive to reach maturity, according to the company.<\/p>\n<p>Last year millions of mosquitoes were released in the Florida Keys in a pilot project last year and the EPA on Monday gave the green light to extending the project in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/where\/florida\/\">Florida<\/a>\u00a0as well as expanding it into four counties in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/where\/california\/\">California<\/a>, pending approval from the states\u2019 regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Oxitec head of global public affairs Meredith Fensom said while the EPA approval covers one Florida county and four in California and the release of more than 2billion genetically altered male mosquitoes across the states, the launch is planned to be much more limited \u2013 covering only the Florida Keys and expanding to\u00a0Visalia in\u00a0Tulare County, California.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" chikungunya.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Aedes aegypti, which is an invasive species, make up just a small fraction of the total mosquito population in Florida, they account for a large number of the cases of human diseases, Fensom said.<\/p>\n<p>Florida has seen a dengue outbreak as recently as 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The species is growing in California but so far there have not been confirmed cases of dengue, chikungunya, Zika\u00a0or yellow fever spread through the insect, according to the state\u2019s health officials.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" in two different environments, Fensom said.<\/p>\n<p>The genetically modified mosquitoes the company produces are males with a \u201cself-limiting gene,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>While the difference can\u2019t be detected by the naked eye, the modified insects produce male offspring and female offspring that cannot survive, Fensom said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hoped that over time, as the female population decreases, so will the overall population.<\/p>\n<p>However, the move has been met by some opposition from environmental groups who are concerned about the potential impacts of the genetically altered insects,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/03\/08\/genetically-modified-mosquitoes-florida-california\/9424548002\/\">USA Today<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<figure dangerous for public health,\u201d said\u00a0Dana Perls,\u00a0food and technology program manager with Friends of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>A major concern with the expansion of the Florida project, according to Perls, is the lack of widespread, peer-reviewed scientific date from the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Peer-reviewed data is expected to be released, according to Fensom, but Perls said there was a worry about a potential risk without a more rigorous and public review.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" confirmed transmission of diseases like dengue, chikungunya, Zika or yellow fever from Aedes aegypti in California was also of concern to\u00a0Perls: \u201cThere\u2019s no im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te problem and there are a lot of unknowns,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Perls added that without the data it was unclear if the mosquitoes and their offspring would act as predicted by Oxitec.<\/p>\n<p>There was a concern a hybrid species could be produced which could be difficult to eradicate, Perls said.<\/p>\n<p>Fensom said the insects had been designed so the population would die out over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you release these mosquitoes into the environment, you cannot recall them,\u201d Perls said. \u201cThis could, in fact, create problems that we don\u2019t have
