Google\u2019s Inbox has been resurrected by a new company. The music streaming service 8tracks was reborn. And legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> player <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winamp.com\/\">WinAmp<\/a> is being overhauled.<\/p>\n<p>And the latest entrant to the pack? LimeWire. Yep, that file-sharing service where you got your MP3s in high school. Now, it\u2019s making a comeback as a\u2026 digital collectible service in the music space?<\/p>\n<p>Shockingly, there\u2019s a crypto element to it too. Who would\u2019ve thought?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we\u2019ll talk about all that later. But first, a bit of context.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_brief_history_of_LimeWire\"><\/span><strong>A brief history of LimeWire<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The 2000s were an era that saw a ton of peer-to-peer file-sharing services launching. There weren\u2019t any streaming services around, and YouTube was fairly new, so P2P systems were a refuge for people looking to discover new music.<\/p>\n<p>One of the famous names in the sector was LimeWire. The duo has been building <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eversign.com\/\">multiple<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zerossl.com\/\">products<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/stackholdings\/?originalSubdomain=at\">together<\/a> for more than a decade, and they acquired the rights to the LimeWire brand in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The company plans to sign contracts with marquee artists for the initial phase, where they\u2019ll produce and release music exclusively for LimeWire.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of said artist, you can sign up, complete a simple <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/help.coinbase.com\/en\/coinbase\/managing-my-account\/update-my-account\/identity-verification-faq#:~:text=Coinbase%20uses%20Identity%20Verification%20in,and%20use%20of%20fraudulent%20accounts.\">KYC (Know Your Customer)<\/a> process, and buy exclusive copies of any of their music through card, bank transfer, or cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, you\u2019ll get access to tracks, exclusive footage, interviews, artwork, and the artist community.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wheres_the_NFT_part\"><\/span><strong>Where\u2019s the NFT part?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Currently, LimeWire will only release artifacts (like an album\u2019s artwork) on the blockchain as NFTs. All the other stuff stays on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, the co-CEOs said they\u2019re partnering with \u201ca leading blockchain,\u201d and they\u2019ll announce more details about it soon.<\/p>\n<p>Given web3\u2019s shaky landscape, it would\u2019ve been good to know what tech is at the backend, so that we know the project won\u2019t crash and burn.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_will_this_work_for_you\"><\/span><strong>How will this work for you?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Once you buy an album or a song on LimeWire, you have to stream it through the platform. All other bonus content would also live on the site. And, as mentioned, you\u2019ll also get access to that artist\u2019s fan community.<\/p>\n<p>But \u2014 and here\u2019s the kicker \u2014 there\u2019s no separate Discord server or Telegram group for that. It\u2019s all on LimeWire.<\/p>\n<p>You can choose to resell your access. But, again, everything remains on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if I buy album access for $50, I can choose to resell it for $200 on LimeWire. If I do that, I will lose access to both the content, and the community.<\/p>\n<p>While you have access to the media, you can choose to resell stuff like cover art \u2014 that was minted on the blockchain \u2014 on other platforms. And you will have access to those even after you resell on LimeWire.<\/p>\n<p>How this is going to function in reality is still unclear, so we\u2019ll all have to wait for the platform\u2019s launch in May. So, if you\u2019re not into crypto and web3, you can access an artist\u2019s content through traditional money, and enjoy the benefits of LimeWire without worrying about technicalities.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a novice, you can choose the reselling path without figuring out different kinds of wallets and blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>And \u2014 if you\u2019re into web3 \u2014 you can get into NFT owning and selling part of it. So there\u2019s inclusion for all folks.<\/p>\n<p>As a fan, it feels counterintuitive to sign up for another service. While the process sounds simple with multiple payment options, there might be a learning curve for users to gauge exactly <em>what<\/em>\u00a0they\u2019re getting out of it.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this could work for superfans (and we have to assume that\u2019s who LimeWire is targeting), but it really depends on the artists the company can sign up.<\/p>\n<p>As for the musicians themselves, this project at least requires some big names at the start, and those folks might be earning millions already.<\/p>\n<p>And even though the platform will offer 90% of sale proceeds to musicians, we don\u2019t currently know how profitable this will be for indie artists given the amount of work and exclusivity attached to the project.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Music_and_NFT\"><\/span><strong>Music and NFT<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>What is inarguable is that music-based NFT platforms are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/271904\/20220216\/best-music-nft-marketplaces-visit-2022.htm\">getting more popular<\/a>. The core concept is more palpable than other formats of NFTs, and the value is more visible. You buy something from the artists, they get money, and you get access to content no one else has.<\/p>\n<p>Artists like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/pro\/news\/oneof-nft-marketplace-quincy-jones-whitney-houston-tlc-doja-cat-crypto-1173557\/\">Quincy Jones, \u200b\u200bWhitney Houston, Doja Cat, John Legend<\/a>, and AR Rahman are backing NFT-based projects. And labels such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/17\/universal-music-aims-to-make-money-in-metaverse-with-artist-nfts\/\">Universal<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wmg.com\/news\/digital-collectibles-platform-blockparty-partners-warner-music-group-36101\">Warner Music<\/a> are also looking to dip their toes into the space.<\/p>\n<p>On one level, LimeWire\u2019s idea is a good one: making a web3-aligned product that caters to all audiences. The key point will be the caliber and number of artists it can attract to use the platform. And, of course, the level of benefits musicians get.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s an interesting reskin of the famed file-sharing platform. Maybe this is enough to attract users who associate LimeWire with teenage nostalgia.
