almost 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>The mysterious sample was collected during the US space agency\u2019s last manned mission to the Moon in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>The sample from the Apollo 17 mission will be exactly 50 years old on December 13 this year.<\/p>\n<p>Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison \u201cJack\u201d Schmitt collected the Moon sample by hammering a 14-inch tube into the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p>They also collected another sample that wasn\u2019t sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Both tubes were filled up with Moon rock and dust.<\/p>\n<p>The two samples were brought back to Earth and the one that wasn\u2019t vacuum sealed was opened in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The vacuum-sealed tube is more exciting because it may contain substances called \u2018volatiles\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Volatiles are gases Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>They would have escaped from the unsealed Moon sample tube but they may be present in the vacuum-sealed one.<\/p>\n<p>NASA has waited until now to open the sealed sample because they wanted to take advantage of future <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Lori Glaze, director of the Planetary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Division, explained: \u201cThe agency knew science and technology would evolve and allow scientists to study the material in new ways to address new questions in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Zeigler, the Apollo sample curator, added: \u201cA lot of people are getting excited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversity of New Mexico\u2019s Chip Shearer proposed the project over a decade ago, and for the past three years, we\u2019ve had two great teams developing the unique equipment to make it possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The careful process of opening the sample has begun.<\/p>\n<p>The outer seal has been opened but the inner seal is still intact.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists will pierce the sample tube first and collect any gases that may be tr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\"
