Brown credits his involvement with the Conservatives to Charest, whom he met as a teenager while visiting his aunt, Charest\u2019s next-door neighbour in North Hatley, Que. The two have spoken at length about the leadership race. I\u2019m told to expect neither will say a bad word about the other \u2014 a non-aggression pact, if you will \u2014 and that they will \u201cpublicly\u201d help one another. Their goals are similarly aligned: a united but more inclusive party that represents the country. Each anticipates the other\u2019s supporters will mark him as their second choice on the party\u2019s ranked ballots, and they may make that expectation clear when members start receiving their ballots this summer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Suit settled: Patrick Brown\u2019s<\/strong> path to the leadership was cleared somewhat on Wednesday when he reached an agreement with CTV to settle a lawsuit over a 2018 story about allegations of sexual misconduct, the <em>Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/conservative-leadership-prospect-patrick-brown-settles-lawsuit-with-ctv-his-name-has-been-cleared\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On Monday, CTV National News signed an agreement with Brown indicating that they \u201chave resolved their legal dispute.\u201d CTV also expressed regret for inaccuracies in its reporting that cost Brown his job as Ontario PC leader four years ago. \u201cKey details provided to CTV for the story were factually incorrect and required correction. CTV National News regrets including those details in the story and any harm this may have caused to Mr. Brown,\u201d said the CTV statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>CTV has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/patrick-brown-settles-lawsuit-with-ctv-no-money-exchanges-hands-1.5812455\">a story<\/a> on the settlement that points out no money changed hands.<\/div>\n<div id=\"fsk_splitbox_27_onscreen\" class=\"fsk_splitbox_27_onscreen\"><strong>Unfortunate:<\/strong> In <em>iPolitics<\/em>, <strong>Michelle Rempel Garner<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ipolitics.ca\/2022\/03\/09\/ctvs-mistakes-set-women-back\/\">a column<\/a> saying CTV\u2019s error set women back.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Soon:<\/strong> Brown\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-patrick-brown-to-decide-very-soon-whether-to-seek-tory-leadership\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">tells<\/a> the <em>Globe<\/em> he is \u201cgoing to make a decision very soon\u201d about entering the race<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trouble ahead?<\/strong> <em>Le Journal de Montr\u00e9al<\/em>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2022\/03\/09\/laicite-de-letat-jean-charest-oppose-a-la-loi-21\">reports<\/a> that Charest is opposed to Quebec\u2019s Bill 21, which outlaws religious symbols, which could pose problems with francophone voters he would need in Quebec, where the law is popular.\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Paul Wells<\/strong> has an insightful column reflecting on the upcoming contest between Charest and Pierre Poilievre, with a good refresher on Charest\u2019s long career, which has featured some ups and downs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Charest and Poilievre will ask Conservatives two different questions. Charest\u2019s is: Are you tired of losing yet? Poilievre\u2019s is: Are you tired of leaders who will say anything to win, and then don\u2019t even win? Just about everyone I know who thinks Conservatism has gone downhill since <strong>Joe Clark<\/strong> retired is rooting for Charest. The ones who wish <strong>Andrew Scheer<\/strong> and <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> hadn\u2019t bothered to pretend that they cared about climate change are with Poilievre. I feel comfortable saying that among current Conservative members, the we-miss-Joe crowd are outnumbered by the climate-change-is-Davos-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ism crowd.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><strong>Long race:<\/strong> In the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>Chris Selley<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/chris-selley-a-long-leadership-race-will-do-the-conservatives-some-good\">a thoughtful column<\/a> on the CPC race, which he thinks needs to be long in order for the party to get beyond \u201ccheap sloganeering\u201d from Team Poilievre.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Aid to Ukraine:<\/strong> In Berlin on Wednesday, <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> spoke with Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>\u00a0and promised to send more military equipment: \u201cWe have obtained a number of specialized equipment, including cameras used in drones.\u201d Zelensky has accepted an invitation to address the House of Commons, the PMO said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. Trudeau made the announcement in Berlin on Wednesday following a meeting with Chancellor <strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong>. The Prime Minister also spoke at a security forum where he said he \u201cunquestionably\u201d believes Ukraine will win the war. \u201cThe question is how long its going to take, how we manage to get there with the least amount of loss possible,\u201d Mr. Trudeau said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Foreign fighters:<\/strong> CBC\u2019s <strong>Murray Brewster<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/ukraine-russia-putin-canadian-forces-1.6372259\">an interesting story<\/a>\u00a0on Canadian veterans who have gone to Ukraine to fight, including an interview with a Canadian sniper who recently crossed over from Poland.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI want to help them. It\u2019s as simple as that,\u201d said Wali, who also did a stint as a foreign fighter with the Kurdish forces\u00a0which battled Islamic State extremists in northern Iraq several years ago. \u201cI have to help because there are people here being bombarded just because they want to be European and not Russian.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><strong>Maple Leaf battalion?<\/strong> A Ukrainian government source <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/world\/exclusive-so-many-canadian-fighters-in-ukraine-they-have-their-own-battalion-source-says\">tells<\/a>\u00a0the<em> Post<\/em> that so many Canadians have shown up in Ukraine that they have their own battalion.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Kenney in trouble:<\/strong> A new poll from\u00a0Think HQ Public Affairs shows <strong>Jason Kenney<\/strong> might lose the leadership vote coming up in Red Deer, <strong>Don Braid<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/opinion\/columnists\/braid-poll-shows-most-albertans-want-kenney-out-but-he-still-has-strength-in-his-party\">writes<\/a> in the <em>Calgary Herald<\/em>. The polls shows\u00a061 per cent of Albertans want a new leader for the UCP, but only members vote.<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>Diehard party loyalists are the most likely to pay the fee and vote.
