Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that explores how the controversial 1975 film The Beast satirizes scandal cover-ups.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever wanted to know what would h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en if Jean Cocteau was a sex maniac, I\u2019ve got great \u2014 if highly niche \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> for you.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>The Beast<\/i><\/b> is directed by Walerian Borowczyk. a Polish director described in his <em>New York Times\u00a0<\/em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/03\/05\/nyregion\/walerian-borowczyk-82-surrealist-auteur-dies.html#:~:text=Walerian%20Borowczyk%2C%20an%20internationally%20known,heart%20trouble%2C%20friends%20of%20Mr.\">obit<\/a> as \u201ca genius, a pornographer, and a genius who also happened to be a pornographer.\u201d The film loosely adapts the 19th Century horror novella <em>Lokis<\/em>, which tells of a wealthy French family desperate to marry their fail-son Mathurin de l\u2019Esperance (Pierre Benedetti) to a respectable young woman. When such a marital opportunity presents itself in the form of the wealthy Lucy (Lisbeth Hummel), the family\u2019s patriarch is overjoyed. Now it\u2019s just a matter of hiding the despicable legend that haunts the de l\u2019Esperance family: an unholy union between an animal and a woman that has muddied the family\u2019s gene pool.<\/p>\n<p>Much like its source material, <em>The Beast\u00a0<\/em>is chiefly concerned with the preoccupying dichotomy of Romanticism: the duality of man and beast, culture and wilderness, nurture and nature. The film also boasts a deliciously rich satirical bent, using absurd and ridiculous perversions to underline the lengths corrupt powers will go to bury their scandals, with its critical barbs pointed unambiguously towards the Catholic church.<\/p>\n<p>No small irony then that the film was censored to high heaven, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbfc.co.uk\/education\/case-studies\/la-bete-the-beast\">especially in the UK<\/a> where the film only narrowly avoided prosecution for obscenity and remained impossible to screen for many decades. Funny how that seems to be a trend with films that criticize the hypocritical corruption of the catholic church, huh?<\/p>\n<p>In case it wasn\u2019t painfully obvious, a strong stomach and open mind are required to press on. While much of the film\u2019s more salacious moments were judiciously omitted from the video essay. But we\u2019d be remiss not to mention that <em>The Beast<\/em>\u2018s reputation as a cinematic taboo is absolutely deserved (a good thing!).
