Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in March 2019. It was quickly backed by two of his Democratic colleagues, Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Ron Wyden of Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>As the measure passed, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/therecount\/status\/1503801955038253068\">let out<\/a> an audible \u201cYes!\u201d on the Senate floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the House approves the measure and President Biden signs it, the legislation would not take effect until the fall of 2023 since airlines, railroads and other mass transit operators have built out schedules based on the current timekeeping system. <\/p>\n<p>The US will enter Standard Time in November of this year, when Americans in every state except Hawaii and non-Navajo areas of Arizona turn their clocks back one hour. This past Sunday marked the start of Daylight Saving Time.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/12\/opinions\/daylight-saving-time-legislation-markey-rubio\/index.html\">op-ed published last week<\/a>, Rubio and Markey advocated for the time change, calling it \u201can inconvenience to people everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/daylight-savings-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Employees with the Architect of the Capitol wind the Ohio Clock in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S., January 21, 2020.\" class=\"wp-image-21536719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/daylight-savings-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/daylight-savings-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/daylight-savings-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act, which would nix the biannual tradition of switching the clock.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS\/Joshua Roberts\/File<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t always get bipartisan agreement in Congress these days, but here\u2019s one thing we can agree on: we could all use a bit more sunshine,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re working together in the US Senate to make sure we end the practice of \u2018spring forward\u2019 and \u2018fall back\u2019 by making daylight saving time permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two senators argued that darker afternoons in winter can affect mental and physical health and that biannual transitions of \u201cspring forward\u201d and \u201cfall back\u201d disrupt sleeping patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rate of heart attacks spikes by 24 [percent] in the days following \u2018spring forward\u2019 in March, according to a 2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/healthblog.uofmhealth.org\/heart-health\/why-daylight-saving-time-could-increase-your-heart-attack-risk\">study<\/a> from the University of Michigan. Another <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aan.com\/PressRoom\/Home\/PressRelease\/1440\">study<\/a>, published in 2016, found stroke rates may also increase by eight percent,\u201d the two wrote. \u201cYear-round daylight saving time could also decrease the likelihood of fatal car accidents, which jump six percent in the days following the time change, according to a 2020 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(19)31678-1?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0960982219316781%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\">study<\/a> from the University of Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/marco-rubio-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"U.S. Sen. Tell your senators to lighten up and back our Sunshine Protection Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US first enacted a law adopting Daylight Saving Time in 1918, at the height of America\u2019s involvement in World War I. The measure was repealed the following year due to its widespread unpopularity, though a few states and cities \u2014 including New York \u2014 continued the practice.<\/p>\n<p>Daylight Saving Time returned during World War II and remained in effect continuously between February 1942 and September 1945. The time frame has since been extended twice by law changes. Currently, Daylight Saving Time begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. <\/p>\n<p>In January 1974, President Richard Nixon signed the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act, setting Standard Time forward by one hour in an effort save fuel during the ongoing gas crisis. The change again proved widely unpopular, especially with parents who feared sending their children off to school in the dark.
