CP has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baytoday.ca\/national-news\/poilievre-pitches-to-new-immigrants-as-brown-attacks-him-over-2015-niqab-ban-bill-5158296\">a story<\/a>\u00a0on the back and forth, which might be best enjoyed with popcorn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contre 21: Leslyn Lewis<\/strong> came out against Quebec\u2019s Bill 21, which she called \u201creligious discrimination,\u201d the <em>Star<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/14\/lewis-calls-bill-21-religious-discrimination-poilievre-hopes-quebec-repeals-law.html\">reports<\/a>. Poilievre also came out against the bill, as Charest has previously done, suggesting that whoever wins the race, the party will have a different position that that advanced by <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong>, who vowed not to interfere in an area of Quebec\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Too much? Brian Lilley<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/lilley-tory-infighting-only-helps-trudeaus-grits\">writes<\/a> in the <em>Toronto Sun<\/em> that the back and forth between CPC leadership rivals will help the Liberals, since the would-be leaders are writing attack ads for the next election.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not so bad? John Ivison<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/john-ivison-theres-more-to-pierre-poilievre-than-the-caricature-he-sometimes-seems\">a column<\/a> about Poilievre\u2019s policy promise of Monday, about accreditation for skilled immigrants, opining that \u201cnotwithstanding his political hit-jobs on rivals <strong>Jean Charest<\/strong> and <strong>Patrick Brown<\/strong> over the weekend, is that he is quite capable of doing better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other hand:<\/strong> In the <em>Hill Times<\/em>, <strong>Susan Riley<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hilltimes.com\/2022\/03\/14\/time-to-take-poilievre-seriously-no-matter-how-unserious-he-seems\/349257\">contemplates<\/a> Poilievre at length, arguing that progressives should take him seriously: \u201cProgressive Canadians\u2014not only Liberals, but especially Liberals\u2014need to respond with verve, flash and conviction. And, since\u00a0 Trudeau himself is incapable of spontaneous utterance, someone else has to lead this fight \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cactus cost:<\/strong> On Monday, an Ontario court ordered <strong>Maxime Bernier<\/strong> to pay $132,000 in legal costs after his lawsuit against <strong>Warren Kinsella<\/strong> was dismissed, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-maxime-bernier-ordered-to-pay-132000-in-legal-costs-after-failed\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The People\u2019s Party of Canada Leader had sued Mr. Kinsella for his role in a secret campaign called Project Cactus, which aimed to discredit Mr. Bernier and his party as racist in early 2019 ahead of the federal election that fall. Justice <strong>Calum MacLeod<\/strong> dismissed the lawsuit in a Nov. 10, 2021, ruling, siding with Mr. Kinsella\u2019s legal defence that the case should be rejected based on Ontario\u2019s \u201canti-SL<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APP<\/a>\u201d legislation, which aims to discourage the use of strategic lawsuits to prevent individuals or organizations from speaking out on matters of public interest. Essentially, the judge determined that Mr. Bernier failed to prove that his defamation concerns outweighed the importance of protecting free speech. In a ruling Monday, Justice MacLeod ruled that Mr. Bernier should pay for almost all of Mr. Kinsella\u2019s legal costs and pointed to the rationale behind Ontario\u2019s anti-SLAPP law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legislation seeks to ensure that unmeritorious litigation cannot be used as a weapon to stifle constitutionally protected speech,\u201d the ruling states. \u201cIn the case at bar, not only did Mr. Bernier seek to punish Mr. Kinsella for attacking him and the People\u2019s Party of Canada, but he also pursued the litigation for an extraneous purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mysterious probe<\/strong>: Unifor boss <strong>Jerry Dias<\/strong>, who retired Sunday, is being investigated by the union for an alleged breach of its constitution, the Globe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-unifor-jerry-dias-retirement-union-announcement\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Unifor national secretary-treasurer <strong>Lana Payne<\/strong> received a written complaint about Mr. Dias on Jan. 26 and then started an independent external investigation, according to a statement the union issued on Monday. But the union declined to divulge specifics about the complaint and said it will not publicly comment on the matter until it receives the investigative report, which it said is expected in the near future.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Arctic bound: Anita Anand<\/strong> is going on an Arctic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>, and discussing new spending in northern defence, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/arctic-sovereignty-concerns-russian-invasion-ukraine-1.6383410\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Likely not:<\/strong> Transport Canada is looking into whether supporters of the \u201cFreedom Convoy\u201d were vaccinated before they boarded a private flight to Ottawa last month, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/transport-canada-investigating-whether-freedom-convoy-supporters-aboard-flight-were-screened-for-vaccination-1.5819328?cid=sm:trueanthem:ctvnews:twittermanualpost&amp;taid=622ff384ae1142000138b4fa&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+New+Content+(Feed)&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to one of the passengers on the flight, some of those aboard were not vaccinated, an apparent violation of the federal government mandate requiring most air and rail passengers to produce proof of vaccination before travel. \u201cTransport Canada has been made aware of the incident and is following up with the air operator to ensure compliance,\u201d Transport Canada spokesperson Sau Sau Liu said in an email.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Our woman in DC:<\/strong> In <em>Maclean\u2019s,<\/em> <strong>Marie-Danielle Smith<\/strong> interviews\u00a0<strong>Kirsten Hillman<\/strong>, Canada\u2019s U.S. ambassador, who had some interesting things to say about the nature of the relationship with our neighbour, including, surprisingly, that Canada had access at the highest level under the last president, just as it does now.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We had very close access to [Trump\u2019s] team. I met with their national security adviser several times. When we were working on the USMCA, I had the cellphone numbers of several senior advisers in the White House, and we talked regularly. This isn\u2019t something that is personal, you know. It\u2019s my job to build those contacts and relationships and networks.
