The Northwestern Medicine physician also said, \u201cIt\u2019s important for people to avoid or minimize the amount of light exposure during sleep.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The authors of the study said up to 40 percent of individuals sleep with a light on in the bedroom or keep the\u00a0television\u00a0on. Zee\u2019s research team discovered that moderate light exposure while sleeping caused the body to go into a higher alert state. The researchers explained in the release that this heightened state caused an increase in heart rate and blood flow in the participants\u2019 vessels and increased the force with which the heart contracts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, evidence has shown that exposure to light during the daytime hours, increases an individual\u2019s heart rate by activating the sympathetic nervous system, contributing to a heightened awareness. The sympathetic\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nervous-system-health\">nervous system<\/a>\u00a0is also known as the \u201cfight or flight\u201d system and helps an individual face challenges or avoid danger, health experts told Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur results indicate that a similar effect is also present when exposure to light occurs during nighttime sleep,\u201d Zee said in the release. The researchers found that a person\u2019s body cannot rest properly in a lighted room and the individual\u2019s heart rate increased even in a moderately lit room.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Co-first author Dr. Daniela Grimaldi, who is a research assistant professor of neurology at Northwestern, said in the release, \u201cEven though you are asleep, your autonomic nervous system is activated. That\u2019s bad. Usually, your heart rate together with other cardiovascular parameters are lower at night and higher during the day.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the sympathetic nervous system takes over during the day, the parasympathetic nervous system typically takes over at night, allowing a person\u2019s body to rest and restore, according to the study release. However, the researchers said this does not h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en with those who slept in a lighted room.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The investigators also found insulin\u202fresistance occurred in the lighted room participants. This is where a person cannot properly utilize glucose from their blood for energy because the cells in the muscles, liver and fat do not respond to insulin appropriately. The pancreas\u202fthen must make more insulin and over time and the individual\u2019s blood sugar goes up, the release said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to sleep, nutrition and exercise, light exposure during the daytime is an important factor for health, but during the night we show that even modest intensity of light can impair measures of heart and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/endocrine\">endocrine<\/a>\u00a0health,\u201d Zee said in the release.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_researchers_suggested_these_tips_for_reducing_light_while_sleeping\"><\/span><strong>The researchers suggested these tips for reducing light while sleeping:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Turn lights off.<\/strong>\u00a0If you must have a light on (which older adults may want for safety), use a dim light close to the floor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use an amber or a red\/orange light<\/strong>. It is less stimulating for the brain. Avoid using a white or blue light and keep it far away from the sleeping person.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use blackout shades or eye masks\u00a0<\/strong>if you cannot control the outdoor light.
