class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Top executives at Big Tech firms like Google and Meta could face jail time if they don\u2019t comply with a strict new online safety bill introduced in the UK parliament on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Backers of the bill say it will address a slate of online dangers, including fraud, harassment and the exposure of children to pornography.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the bill, UK\u2019s Office of Communications, or Ofcom, would have the ability to conduct wide-ranging investigations into companies to help enforce the law.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ofcom will also have the power to audit algorithms used by sites like Instagram and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> to recommend content to users as part of an effort to \u201cassess how they are shielding users from harm.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If tech companies provide Ofcom with false information, fail to attend interviews with the regulator, destroy evidence or block investigators from entering their offices, top executives from those companies can face criminal charges and jail time of up to two years, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/world-first-online-safety-laws-introduced-in-parliament\">according<\/a> to the UK\u2019s government\u2019s digital secretary Nadine Dorries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sites can also face times of up to 10% of their annual turnover if they fail to remove harmful content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTech firms haven\u2019t been held to account when harm, abuse and criminal behavior have run riot on their platforms,\u201d Dorries said. \u201cIf we fail to act, we risk sacrificing the wellbeing and innocence of countless generations of children to the power of unchecked algorithms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Open Rights Group, a London-based digital rights and civil liberties advocacy group, called the bill a \u201cfestival of inane, poorly thought out and dangerous ideas.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlacing people in jail for failures to abide by regulatory duties to remove legal content ought to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear extreme and dangerous,\u201d the group\u2019s executive director Jim Killock <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openrightsgroup.org\/blog\/online-safety-made-dangerous\/\">wrote<\/a> on Thursday. \u201cYet it is being touted as a central policy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLonger term, it will be fuel for the Putins and other authoritarians, who revel in the prospect of identifying everyone and deciding for themselves what is right and wrong, and will be very pleased that the UK government is taking essentially the same approach,\u201d Killock said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \u201ccyberflashing\u201d \u2014 sending obscene pictures to strangers without their consent \u2014 as well as require sites that feature pornography to verify that users are over 18 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Backers of the bill argue that it will crack down on harmful online content while also protecting free speech. Users who think their posts have been censored unfairly will have the right to appeal, while \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> content\u201d will be exempt from any restrictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill will strengthen people\u2019s rights to express themselves freely online and ensure social media companies are not removing legal free speech,\u201d digital secretary Dorries said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Killock from the Open Rights Group took issue with the government regulators deciding what is and isn\u2019t \u201cnews content.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state will now regulate who is allowed to be the media, at least in order to avoid online censorship,\u201d Killock said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also extremely hard to see how the distinction between the uncensorable press and the rest of us will be maintained in practice, without making press posts and online comments attached to them a haven for the worst kinds of social media comments and behavior,\u201d he added.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
