had some pointed questions about\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-zelenskyy-roman-abramovich-kyiv-kharkiv-597768a19884e0472be9c7190adac658\">the war in Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she asked what nuclear weapons were, I explained in simple terms that they\u2019re explosive devices used in warfare that are capable of releasing tremendous amounts of energy and causing widespread harm and damage,\u201d said the Annapolis, Maryland, founder of a support group called Moms for Mental Health.<\/p>\n<p>But her daughter wasn\u2019t finished there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked if we were in danger of being hit with nuclear weapons,\u201d said Amodio. \u201cAnd I explained that leaders around the world are responsible for ensuring that nuclear warfare doesn\u2019t occur, and that we have learned from past instances just how devastating the effects of nuclear warfare can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did what many parents and experts recommend: She led with the truth, though she chose her details based on what she knew her child could handle emotionally.<\/p>\n<p>The day\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-vladimir-putin-business-europe-moscow-563573526a93ea73a95698d8ddb61b9c\">Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his nuclear forces placed on high alert<\/a>\u00a0late last month was a big one for some parents with inquisitive kids.<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>, in classrooms and at the playground,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/how-to-talk-to-children-about-russia-invasion-ukraine-78e940dfaeada370107f2d5ba1a1dda8\">children who hear about Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine are wondering where the war could lead.<\/a>\u00a0It\u2019s a moment that can feel similar to growing up during the Cold War, when there was talk of nuclear winter, radiation and the atomic bomb.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" both accurate images, video and information but loads of disinformation, too. What some also have are loved ones with personal experiences of tense nuclear times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith younger kids, speak simply and avoid discussing scary topics in detail. With adolescents, honesty is the best policy. Always be transparent,\u201d said Dr. Beth Oller, a family physician in Stockton, Kansas, and mom of four kids, ages 2 to 9. \u201cSpeak to what\u2019s actionable to help put their minds at ease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fear of nuclear devastation can have a lifelong impact on children, said Nathaniel N. Ivers, an associate professor of counseling at Wake Forest University. During the Cold War, studies showed that vulnerable populations, including children and caregivers, experienced greater fear and anxiety over the nuclear threat than others, he said.<\/p>\n<p>And parents who expressed more anxiety about a nuclear threat, he said, \u201ctended to have children who were more anxious about nuclear bombs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A threat of nuclear detonation \u2014 something like the Cuban Missile Crisis, for instance \u2014 may create in children a profound awareness of their mortality and vulnerability. \u201cChildren know there is very little they can do to protect themselves if a nuclear bomb were to hit their area, which can create feelings of helplessness and hopelessness,\u201d Ivers said. \u201dIt also can create a sense of nihilism, especially in older children and adolescents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry Williams, a digital designer in Brooklyn, reached for film when his 11-year-old son came to him with questions about nuclear weapons and the war. Not the nuclear submarine spy thriller \u201cThe Hunt for Red October.\u201d Not \u201cThe Sum of All Fears,\u201d another thriller in the Jack Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> that tracks a sinister plot to draw the United States and Russia into World War III.<\/p>\n<p>He chose the unflinching \u201cThreads,\u201d an apocalyptic war drama that follows a young couple in Sheffield, England, in the deadly and chaotic aftermath of a nuclear bombing. The film, filled with realistic horrors, was made for BBC television and first broadcast in 1984. That prompted questions,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a much more realistic movie. Like, this is what it\u2019s like on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His 11-year-old wasn\u2019t visibly shaken, Williams said. As for his younger son, who\u2019s 5 and didn\u2019t watch the film, the questions were far simpler: \u201cSo, we\u2019ll just all be dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To which his father responded: \u201cWell, yes, but that\u2019s very unlikely. He had that notion in his head, that that could h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en, which I thought was incredible. Even then, he wasn\u2019t freaked out by it. From the 9-year-old, he said, came: \u201cDaddy, is that man bad? Is he going to hurt our family? How?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I always do with my kids, I told the truth,\u201d Groll said. \u201cNow I\u2019m pretty sure if anybody asks Giovanna what a nuclear weapon is, she will say to them, \u2018It\u2019s a bomb that could destroy the world.\u2019 She doesn\u2019t seem to be traumatized by my straight-to-the-point explanation, but I confess that I\u2019m not so sure she knows what \u2019destroying the world\u2019 is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Things are different, of course, for children already touched by war or other traumas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor children who have a prior history of trauma, seeing disturbing images may be even more distressing and triggering\u201d and they might \u201crequire increased reassurance and support,\u201d Griffin said.<\/p>\n<p>JR Guerrieri in Lavallette, New Jersey, has two girls, ages 8 and 13. As the founder of a digital communications platform, he does business in Ukraine, and has friends and colleagues there. His daughters have been asking questions about the war and the possibility of nuclear weapons being used.<\/p>\n<p>He showed them photos of the devastation in Hiroshima after the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb in 1945. They learned about it in school, he said, but without real depth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp until now, there was no reason to really talk about it,\u201d Guerrieri said. \u201cYou want them to learn history, of course.
