Alongside the young girl\u2019s remains were several clues, including a pocket knife and two sets of footprints that police believed were hers and her killer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the DNA and forensic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> to make an ID didn\u2019t exist. Fast forward six decades, however, and officials were easily able to identify the victim as <strong>Sharon Lee Gallegos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Missing Porn Star Angelina Please Found Dead At 24<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the <strong>National Center for Missing &amp; Exploited Children<\/strong>, Gallegos was abducted while playing in her grandmother\u2019s backyard in Alamagordo, New Mexico, on July 21, 1960, and taken by \u201ca couple who had been stalking her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gallegos\u2019 nephew, <strong>Ray Chavez<\/strong>, thanked everyone for not giving up during a press conference on Tuesday, sharing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThank you for what you\u2019ve done for us, thank you for keeping my aunt safe and never forgetting her. It\u2019s still sinking in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The cold case warmed up in 2014 when investigators came across the victim\u2019s file while working on an unrelated case. Her skeletal remains were exhumed in 2015 and were sent to several forensic labs from 2016 to 2021 before the Yavapai County Sheriff\u2019s Office teamed up with cutting-edge Texas genealogy lab <strong>Othram<\/strong> at the end of 2021. In February, Othram returned with an ID.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kristen Mittelman<\/strong>, Othram\u2019s Chief Business Development Officer, told<em> The Sun<\/em> on Wednesday this was an \u201ceasy case\u201d because there was a lot of DNA left \u2014 which isn\u2019t typically the case. She shared:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere are so many times that the DNA sample has been consumed or treated wrong with methods that don\u2019t work and used up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Because Othram\u2019s in-house experts makes the \u201cextractions cleaner and better,\u201d they were successfully able to extract a sample from the remains.<\/p>\n<p>Mittelman said this was the fourth cold case Othram solved in the last seven days, noting:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are the most advanced lab in the country. We have the technology to solve more cold cases but not the funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While it costs about $5,000 to solve a case, Mittelman said more time was spent on writing the brief and raising the funds using <em>DNAsolves.com<\/em> than using the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> to ID the victim.<\/p>\n<p>She explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe science isn\u2019t the limiting the part anymore. That\u2019s what\u2019s exciting. We have the technology to clear cold case backlogs across the country. It\u2019s not a science fiction movie. It\u2019s a reality.
