40,000 new possible chemical weapons in just six hours.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to researchers who turned a drug-developing AI into a \u201cbad actor\u201d to see how it could be abused to create evil arms.<\/p>\n<p>The concerning research has been published in the journal\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42256-022-00465-9?fbclid=IwAR11_V1cd9SUxEvUfwrWMA7TUcroyYIY1nBDUL3KaS-8B4rG5MIqZCmjm0M\">Nature Machine Intelligence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists revealed how easy it was to tweak the AI so it became a toxic tool.<\/p>\n<p>The AI was said to come up with possible chemical weapons similar to one of the most dangerous nerve agents of all time.<\/p>\n<p>That dangerous substance is called VX.<\/p>\n<p>VX is a tasteless and odorless nerve agent and even the smallest drop can cause a human to sweat and twitch.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image larger dose can cause convulsions and can even stop a person from breathing completely.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists were told to withhold the specific details on how they managed to turn good-acting AI into an evil version.<\/p>\n<p>Fabio Urbina, the lead author of the paper, told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/17\/22983197\/ai-new-possible-chemical-weapons-generative-models-vx\">The Verge<\/a>: \u201cBroadly, the way it works for this experiment is that we have a lot of datasets historically of molecules that have been tested to see whether they\u2019re toxic or not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"d34Vlt\">\u201cIn particular, the one that we focus on here is VX. It is an inhibitor of what\u2019s known as acetylcholinesterase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"d34Vlt\">\u201cWhenever you do anything muscle-related, your neurons use acetylcholinesterase as a signal to basically say \u201cgo move your muscles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"d34Vlt\">\u201cThe way VX is lethal is it actually stops your diaphragm, your lung muscles, from being able to move so your lungs become paralyzed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on to explain that his team took the data usually given to AI to see if something is toxic and changed how the AI processed it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"OL2tWB\">Urbina told The Verge: \u201cWe weren\u2019t really sure what we were going to get. Meaning you need a very, very, very little amount of it to be lethal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scientists were mostly shocked about how easy they found the experiment was to conduct.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of data they used could be found online for free.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers were even in two minds about publishing their study in case it encouraged bad actors to copy it.<\/p>\n<p>Urbina explained: \u201cThe dataset they used on the AI could be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a>ed for free and they worry that all it takes is some coding knowledge to turn a good AI into a chemical weapon-making machine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, we decided that we kind of want to get ahead of this.
