Read on to see how you can turn your Gmail account into an SMS vault.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Youll_Need\"><\/span>What\u00a0You\u2019ll Need<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to lose your text messages. Everything from switching phones to fumble fingers can drop your messages in front of the digital reaper\u2014just last night I managed to accidentally delete a massive SMS thread when I really only intended to delete a single message that refused to send.<\/p>\n<p>Backing up your SMS messages to your Gmail account is so simple, however, there\u2019s no good reason not to do it. For this tutorial you\u2019ll need three things:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_update\"><p><strong>Update, 3\/15\/22:<\/strong> As of September 14, 2020, Google no longer allows this <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> to access your Gmail account. Fortunately, there is a workaround available in March 2022.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Got all that? Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Technically, you can dig around the advanced settings of SMS Backup+ to reconfigure it to work with any IMAP-enabled email server. Let\u2019s take a moment and hop over to the Gmail account we\u2019re planning on using with the application and check the status.<\/p>\n<p>Log in to your Gmail account and navigate to Settings &gt; <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/u\/0\/#settings\/fwdandpop\">Forwarding and POP\/IMAP<\/a>. Keep the window open, or temporarily save this password somewhere safe. You\u2019ll need it in just a minute.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_Two_Install_and_Configure_SMS_Backup\"><\/span>Step Two: Install\u00a0and Configure SMS Backup+<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With our Gmail account IMAP features toggled on, it\u2019s time to install SMS Backup+. Hit up the Google Play Store and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&amp;hl=en\">download the app<\/a>.\u00a0 After the application is installed, it\u2019s time to get configuring. Launch the application.<\/p>\n<p>The first step is to set up the connection to your Gmail account. You don\u2019t have to tick \u201cTrust All Certificates,\u201d so leave it unticked.<\/p>\n<p>Go back to the main menu, and click \u201cBackup\u201d. Log in to your Gmail account from a web browser. You\u2019ll see a new label in the sidebar: \u201cSMS\u201d. SMS Backup+ automatically backs up your SMS messages as well as your MMS messages. Not only are all of our text messages there but the pictures we\u2019ve sent back and forth are backup up to Gmail along with the messages. Now that we\u2019ve got everything humming along, let\u2019s look at some advanced options.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_Three_Optional_Turn_On_Automatic_Backups\"><\/span>Step Three (Optional): Turn On\u00a0Automatic Backups<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you do nothing else before leaving this tutorial, you need to turn on the automatic backup feature. Leaving things up to manual backup in a surefire way to forget. From the main screen, tap \u201cAuto backup\u201d to turn it on, and then tap on \u201cAuto backup settings\u201d to configure the frequency. The default configuration is a bit aggressive. You may wish to, as we did, decrease the frequency of backups.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-791548\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/options.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Options to decrease sync frequency.\" width=\"649\" height=\"484\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can even set it to only backup over Wi-Fi. There, you can change the settings for backing up, restoring, and notifications. When SMS Backup+ stores your messages in Gmail it creates a thread for each contact.
