But what difference does a belt drive really make, and is it actually worth the usual premium over a tried and trusted chain?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re here to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_belt_drive\"><\/span><b>What is a belt drive?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until ebikes started to become popular, almost every bicycle on the market used a chain. But the advent of ebikes has increasingly made belt drives a popular alternative. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gatescarbondrive.com\/products\/ebikes\">Gates Carbon Drive<\/a> is by far the most popular of these, and it\u2019s the one we\u2019ll focus on the most. There are some alternatives too, but Gates\u2019 belts are so ubiquitous that unless otherwise specified, you can assume we\u2019re talking about this one brand. This isn\u2019t a sponsored post or anything, it\u2019s just the nature of the market right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyway, to answer the question: at its most basic level, a belt drive is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of a chain transmitting power from your legs to the rear wheel, a belt does the job instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Duh_but_whats_the_point_of_using_a_belt\"><\/span><b>Duh, but what\u2019s the <\/b><b><i>point<\/i><\/b><b> of using a belt?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most often-cited benefit to a belt drive is durability. The Gates Carbon belt drive\u00a0is reinforced with \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 carbon fiber. In case you haven\u2019t heard, that stuff is pretty tough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gates\u2019 carbon fiber belts were originally designed for high-power <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications like motorcycles and industrial machinery. Ebikes are comparatively puny, so they should pretty much last forever. It does happen, but only under extreme conditions or use (often situations in which a chain would have given up much earlier). Meanwhile, ebike chains are more prone to failure with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mid-drive motors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the high torque placed on them relative to a regular bike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Durability aside, belt drives are almost completely silent, feel extra smooth while pedaling, require no lubrication, and won\u2019t get grease on your pants. The only maintenance required is keeping the belt clear of too much debris and the occasional tensioning, which is easy to do at home (and involves strumming the belt like a guitar).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, they just look pretty cool, if you ask me.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_catch\"><\/span><b>What\u2019s the catch?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two big caveats to using a belt drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most notable one is that belts are incompatible with traditional derailleurs. That means that virtually every belt-drive bike is either a single-speed (which isn\u2019t the biggest deal when you have a motor to help), or uses internal gears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, belt-drive ebikes that aren\u2019t single-speed use an internally-geared rear hub. That means it\u2019s rare to find belt-drive ebikes that use rear hub motors <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have multiple gears, although occasionally you\u2019ll get bikes with gears closer to the pedals, such as a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pinion.eu\/en\/\">Pinion Gearbox<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.schlumpfdrive.com\/index.php\/home-en.html\">Schlumpf Drive<\/a>. To some up some of the common pros and cons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal gear hubs are usually a lot more durable as components are shielded from the elements and physical damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Derailleurs are usually lighter, although this is a marginal difference on most ebikes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal gear hubs allow you to shift gears from a stop, but some don\u2019t allow you to shift while pedaling. Derailleurs can only shift while the wheel is in motion, which can be annoying if you\u2019re stuck in a high gear at a red light.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal gear hubs are usually less efficient at converting your pedaling into motion than a well-maintained chain and derailleur, and vary more depending on what gear you\u2019re in.<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asmedigitalcollection.asme.org\/IMECE\/proceedings-abstract\/IMECE2013\/56420\/V013T14A044\/256461\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chains are roughly 97-99.5% efficient and tend to be fairly consistent by brand. Internal gear hubs can vary dramatically depending on the brand, and even what specific gear you\u2019re in; I\u2019ve seen figures ranging from above 99% to as low as 80%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, \u201cwell-maintained\u201d is an important caveat, as most people don\u2019t go through the trouble of cleaning and lubricating their drivetrain on a regular basis. That should<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cyclingtips.com\/2020\/05\/how-many-watts-does-a-dirty-chain-steal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offset some of the difference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Derailleurs often offer more gears overall for better finetuning of your pedaling cadence. That said, there are some companies that make split belts, such as<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.veercycle.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but these are still pretty rare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also worth noting belt drive ebikes are normally more expensive. This is in part because of the belt itself, but also because most belt drive ebikes use mid-drive motors unless they are single-speed designs. Naturally, you can\u2019t use a rear hub motor with an internal gear hub, as they\u2019d have to occupy the same space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some cheaper belt-drive ebikes too, like the Ride1Up roadster V2 (which uses a TopTrans belt). That said, the caveat to keep in mind with these alternative belts is that you might have more trouble finding a replacement should the belt actually fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_should_I_get_an_ebike_with_a_belt_drive_instead_of_a_chain\"><\/span><b>So should I get an ebike with a belt drive instead of a chain?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes. If given the choice between an ebike with a belt drive and an ebike with a chain, all else being equal, you should probably choose the ebike with the belt drive. There are very few negatives to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, and it\u2019s just all-around a more premium experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that all else <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually equal. As mentioned, belt drive ebikes can be more expensive, they\u2019re usually single speed or use internal gears, and an internal gear hub often adds a little bit to a bike\u2019s weight. In my experience, belt drives are primarily a really nice quality-of-life feature more than a must-have. In my day-to-day usage, my favorite thing about them is the silent, smooth operation, not getting grease on my pants, and requiring less maintenance overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the durability is really nice for peace of mind, it\u2019s not as if I\u2019m breaking bike chains <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often either. It\u2019s only happened to me once, and fixing a chain isn\u2019t that hard to do with the right toolkit. And while I don\u2019t care about every bit of weight savings and pedaling efficiency possible, I can understand that some people prefer these qualities in a more traditional setup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, getting a bike with a plain old chain and derailleur shouldn\u2019t be a deal-breaker if it otherwise checks all your boxes \u2014 unless you have unusual durability needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, ebikes with belt drives are becoming more common by the week and just make for a nicer ride experience.
