People stopped listening. That\u2019s not altogether a bad thing, considering the messaging about an additional booster is incomplete. Worse, it buries the headline: \u201cWe are winning against COVID-19 and if you\u2019re fully vaccinated you deserve a Medal of Honor.\u201d Which is far better than: \u201cGet a booster . . . or else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More immunity is better than less, but our first goal must be to ensure that the momentum from pandemic to endemic continues. Excessive hype over COVID-19 \u201cboosterism\u201d won\u2019t help.<\/p>\n<p>Booster shots are certainly an important tool in our medical armamentarium, but we must not take our eyes off the prize of getting unvaccinated Americans to roll up their sleeves. Warren\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Convincing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le-vaccinated Americans to get a second booster isn\u2019t a heavy lift. Convincing unvaccinated Americans about the safety, effectiveness and importance of the COVID-19 vaccination is a tall order. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Unfortunately, many people, including elected officials, prefer easy answers. That\u2019s a mistake we cannot afford.<\/p>\n<p>The rationale that antibody levels (even after an additional booster) aren\u2019t robust enough to adequately protect against the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus is misleading at best and, at worst, just plain wrong. <\/p>\n<p>What does the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> say and what does <em>adequate <\/em>mean anyway? Let\u2019s look at the science.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re an otherwise healthy adult and have received three mRNA jabs, you are very well-protected against becoming seriously ill should you become infected. Your symptoms almost surely will be mild, and your discomfort brief. This must be our mantra. \u201cBeing safe\u201d doesn\u2019t necessarily mean not getting COVID-19. Maybe we should call a potential fourth injection the \u201cBoomer Booster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The numbers tell the story. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1254488\/us-share-of-total-covid-deaths-by-age-group\/\">Americans ages 65+ represent 16.5% of the population but 75.3% of COVID -19 deaths<\/a>. One key lesson learned from our pandemic experience is the need to prioritize protective measures for this group \u2014 with vaccination being at the top of the list.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand who\u2019s ending up in the hospital with serious symptoms and dying these days because of COVID-19. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/dying-covid-unvaccinated\/story?id=82834971\">The overwhelming majority \u2014 anywhere from 75% and greater \u2014 are unvaccinated individuals<\/a>. Why? It\u2019s obvious. They aren\u2019t adequately protected against the virus. They are at risk and put everyone else at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Only a small percentage of hospitalizations and deaths are among fully vaxxed people, and even then they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly either elderly or have pre-existing conditions that increase their risk of serious illness or death.<\/p>\n<p>Why are we spending time, money and media attention on a Boomer Booster when the obvious and critical public-health issue is the 30+% of the population that\u2019s not adequately vaccinated?<\/p>\n<p>President Joe Biden has a new COVID-19 coordinator, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/03\/17\/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-the-white-house-covid-19-response-coordinator\/\">Dr. Ashish Jha<\/a>. That\u2019s good news considering our unvaccinated compatriots don\u2019t much like, listen or trust Dr. Fauci. In fact, Fauci has become the <em>b\u00eate noire <\/em>of the anti-vax movement. We need to have a serious, respectful, inclusive, creative, aggressive and <em>focused<\/em> national conversation over the most comprehensive, swiftest and smartest science-based way to address and expedite the emerging endemic phase of COVID-19: Getting more Americans vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Another booster for vaccinated Americans is an interesting conversation, but it is far from the most important asset in our health-care arsenal. We need to keep our eye on the prize. If we want to take and keep our masks off, we need to put our thinking caps on.<\/p>\n<p><em>Peter J.
