We also sell more of it overseas than we buy from foreign companies.<\/p>\n<p>Yet we still rely heavily on imported oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because our wells are located far from the Northeast and West Coast, where most of our gasoline is consumed, and we don\u2019t have the pipelines to transport it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not in all the right places,\u201d said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, a consulting company in Houston.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/mobil-gas-prices.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682\" alt=\"This March, California gas prices (above) soared to unthinkable heights. \" class=\"wp-image-21564558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/mobil-gas-prices.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1023 1023w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/mobil-gas-prices.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682 682w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/mobil-gas-prices.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=341 341w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/mobil-gas-prices.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><figcaption>This March, California gas prices (above) soared to unthinkable heights. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Roger \/ BACKGRID<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the\u00a0US producing about 11.6 million barrels of crude per day \u2014 No. 1 in the world, followed by Saudi Arabia\u2019s 10 million and Russia\u2019s 10 million \u2014 almost all of the drilling occurs in the Midwest and Southwest,\u00a0with Texas accounting for five million barrels daily and New Mexico producing one million, Lipow said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you have lesser amounts coming from Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming,\u201d Lipow said. Alaska, which produced two million barrels a day in 1988, is now at 450,000.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge of moving oil thousands of miles across the country means that it\u2019s sometimes cheaper and easier to buy it from other countries. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re lucky to be located in between two friendly oil-producing nations \u2014 Canada and Mexico. They provide the vast majority of our\u00a0energy\u00a0imports,\u201d said Jim Meigs, former editor-in-chief of Popular Mechanics who writes about energy issues.<\/p>\n<p>This also means the US is part of a global energy market. Though we don\u2019t rely much on Russian energy, Europe is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/2022\/03\/14\/qa-how-deep-is-europes-dependence-on-russian-oil\/\">dependent on it<\/a>. So when Russia invaded Ukraine, a sizable part of the global petroleum supply was cut off, pushing the price of oil and gas from other sources up. That all leads to Americans paying more at the pump. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is connected to the world oil market,\u201d said Lipow. \u201cThe invasion has led to sanctions and a <em>de facto<\/em> ban of some Russian oil. But most of these refineries are located in the Gulf Coast, where 54 percent of our gasoline gets made.
