It was also featured in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@spinkii.baddest\/video\/7075326912238832942?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en\">a TikTok video <\/a>that got more than 14,000 likes \u2014 and supportive comments like, \u201cNot paying your bills is ghetto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Thompsons, who are married, have owned the two-family home since 1989. Rice<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Problems began in July when the Thompsons raised the rent on the Lamours\u2019 three-bedroom pad from $1,800 a month to $1,900, the first rent hike in nine years, according to Calvin Jr.<\/p>\n<p>The Lamours didn\u2019t want to pay the 5% increase. Rice<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like all of the sudden, we\u2019re bad tenants,\u201d said Kathia, who has been on unpaid medical leave from her job since the summer. \u201cThey were bamboozling me into an increase. They went ballistic on me because I wouldn\u2019t give it to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think a $100 increase for almost a decade of living is unreasonable,\u201d Calvin Jr. said. \u201cThere are plenty of landlords in our situation because of COVID. A lot of eviction cases are backlogged. She knows this and is going to ride this out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s eviction moratorium, which ended in January, gave wide latitude to renters suffering hardship from the pandemic, but left many landlords in a lurch. The moratorium also allowed renters to put the brakes on an eviction case against them by claiming financial hardship without having to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>The Lamours did not file any COVID hardship forms.<\/p>\n<p>Both families live in the same building, and the only thing separating them is floorboards.<\/p>\n<p>The Lamours\u2019 lawyer, Andreas Spiker, said the sign is a form of harassment and will only hurt the Thompsons\u2019 case.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
