But the CDC provides a more complete figure based on death-certificate data reported by state and city health officials.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s 60,000 death toll was shattered in mid-December as the coronavirus\u2019s Omicron wave hit New York.<\/p>\n<p>New York City got hammered early during the first COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020, when there were no vaccines available and local hospitals were overwhelmed with limited treatment. Those who died during that time still represent a significant percentage of the state\u2019s overall death tally, health experts say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not very surprising,\u201d Dr. Ayman El-Mohandes, dean of the City University of New York\u2019s Graduate School of Public Health, said of the state reaching the tragic 70,000 mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the deaths occurred during the early onslaught in New York,\u201d he said. \u201cAlso, front-line workers had to go to their jobs. They could not self-isolate. We shouldn\u2019t let our guard down,\u201d El-Mohandes said.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Frieden, the former CDC director under ex-President Barack Obama and the New York City health commissioner under then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg, said prevention and better preparation are the best medicines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know how COVID will evolve or how long immunity we\u2019ve gained from infection or vaccination will last,\u201d said Frieden, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrTomFrieden\/status\/1505544998506442753\">who tweeted <\/a>that \u201cI\u2019ll never forget the haunting sound of constant sirens\u201d when COVID-19 first hit the Big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important we stay vigilant, keep learning and planning, use the effective tools we have and adapt precautions to the level of spread in each community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID increases in Europe could presage an increase in the US. COVID isn\u2019t going away, but we have more tools than ever to limit its impact \u2014 from vaccines and masks to treatments, tests, ventilation, and surveillance.
