data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> resurfaced again of Tesla\u2019s interest in aviation.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given how many stories turn out to be nothing more than rumors, I decided to look into the likelihood of a Tesla aircraft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_whats_the_latest\"><\/span><strong>So what\u2019s the latest?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not as much as you might think.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Working on Master Plan Part 3<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1504311459924398083?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 17, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The billionaire entrepreneur shared a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, saying he is \u201cworking on Master Plan Part 3,\u201d without revealing more details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, Morgan Stanley\u2019s key analyst on all things Tesla, Adam Jonas, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/news\/elon-musk-hints-at-master-plan-part-3-whats-in-the-works-at-tesla\/ar-AAVfr7L\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asserted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a research note reported by MSN:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our view, the chance that Tesla does not ultimately offer products and services to the eVTOL [electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft]\/UAM [ urban air mobility] market is remote. The potential skills transferability and network adjacencies are too strong to ignore.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_did_the_Tesla_aviation_rumors_start\"><\/span><strong>How did the Tesla aviation rumors start?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been plenty of efforts to link Tesla and the sky. Elon Musk has not been shy in speculating about extending Tesla\u2019s business beyond electric cars, space exploration, hyperloop tunnels, brain implants, and trucks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost everything he says becomes either headline or article fodder and gets shared globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if I was going to pick out a few examples to build an argument for a Tesla aircraft, I\u2019d include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk in 2008 <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Cim8W5vLBKY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> TechCrunch that \u201can electric plane only gets more feasible as battery <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> improves .\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/EuG2AVFB-g0\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iron Man 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Tony Stark walked up to Elon Musk to shake his hand and compliment him about the Merlin engines. Musk smiled and replied, saying he\u2019s got an idea for an electric jet, and Tony says they would make it work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, at a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BaZbgNWNQ3M\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperloop Q&amp;A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Texas A&amp;M, Musk shared: \u201cWell, I have been thinking about the vertical takeoff and landing electric jet a bit more. I mean, I think I have something that might be close. I\u2019m quite tempted to do something about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, on an episode of Third Row Tesla\u2019s podcast, interviewers asked Elon about his plans to enter aviation in 2020. Elon replied:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo. I think it\u2019s incredibly difficult to bring an aircraft to production and meet all the regulatory requirements worldwide. It\u2019s a very difficult thing\u2026 It takes a massive amount of effort to do any one of these things, so you can\u2019t do them all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020 Musk replied to speculation by investor Sam Korus about an electric jet that better battery tech was only three to four years away:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">400 Wh\/kg *with* high cycle life, produced in volume (not just a lab) is not far. Crap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then in 2021, Musk again expressed his enthusiasm, but admitted that another project would make his head explode. It hardly makes a master plan for a supersonic jet or a Tesla eVTOL!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I do think that<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tesla was going to enter the aviation space, it would be in the battery R&amp;D sector. It has been continually developing and expanding the capabilities of Tesla\u2019s batteries in terms of weight, material innovation, and building out the broader charging infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, could we see Tesla batteries in eVTOLs? Maybe. Could we see specialist Tesla-built charging stations? Possibly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Even_Tesla_cant_hurry_up_the_Federal_Aviation_Authority\"><\/span><strong>Even Tesla can\u2019t hurry up the Federal Aviation Authority<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve spoken to several <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VTOL companies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and getting regulated is a long, slow process. The earliest innovators literally helped write the regulations as their tech began to evolve. They have yet to fly people commercially, let alone cargo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, the R&amp;D issue isn\u2019t just a matter of funds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know Musk has plenty of cash, but it\u2019s not so easy to find appropriately skilled staff.
