It would be very foolish for me to write, let\u2019s say, a novel from the viewpoint of a black man, but I think I should be allowed to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler \u2014 who won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her novel \u201cBreathing Lessons\u201d \u2014 also hit out at cancel culture. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf an incredibly talented person has written novels in the 1930s or \u201940s and all of a sudden it is discovered that there was something he said or did \u2014 even something as bad as sexual harassment \u2014 he should be condemned for it but I don\u2019t see why you should withdraw his novels from publication,\u201d she told the British publication.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/anne-tyler-178.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682\" alt=\"Tyler is one of America's most acclaimed fiction writers. Sounds like you don\u2019t want the consequences of such an action. And that\u2019s privilege,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LaLinda63\/status\/1505504486692958208\">one user wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, others encouraged Tyler to freely write about whatever took her fancy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWriters are supposed to be truth-tellers and be free to tell whatever story they wish.
