most part, Windows Update works silently in the background. It <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a>s updates automatically, installs the ones it can, and saves others to install when you restart Windows. But sometimes it breaks and stops working. Here\u2019s how to fix Windows Update when it gets stuck or frozen.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"justthesteps\">\n<li>Try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, which you can search for in the Start menu.<\/li>\n<li>If that doesn\u2019t help, you can try deleting Windows Update\u2019s cache by booting into Safe Mode, stopping the wuauserv service, and deleting the files in\u00a0C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.<\/li>\n<li>If all else fails, download updates manually using the WSUS Offline Update tool.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This can happen on Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11, but it\u2019s become especially common with Windows 7. Sometimes updates will error out, or sometimes\u00a0Windows Update may just get stuck \u201csearching for updates\u201d forever. Here\u2019s how to fix Windows Update<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> Windows updates are important.\u00a0No matter what troubles you\u2019re having, we recommend keeping automatic updates turned on \u2014 it\u2019s one of the best\u00a0ways to keep yourself safe from ransomware and other threats. If you turn automatic updates off, you are leaving yourself vulnerable to new attacks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fix_Windows_Update_with_a_Troubleshooter_on_Windows_11\"><\/span>Fix Windows Update with a Troubleshooter on Windows 11<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Windows includes a built-in troubleshooter that may be able to help fix a stuck update. It\u2019s the easiest method to try, so go ahead and run it first. The troubleshooter will check for problems that could cause Windows Update to fail \u2014 like incorrect security settings, missing or corrupted files, or problems with services.<\/p>\n<p>All modern versions of Windows use the same troubleshooter, but the process for accessing it varies slightly between Windows versions. In Windows 11, it can be found in Settings &gt; Troubleshoot &gt; Other Troubleshooters.<\/p>\n<p>Click Start, type \u201cSettings\u201d into the search bar, and then hit Enter. We\u2019re looking for a troubleshooter labeled \u201cWindows Update.\u201d If you\u2019ve never used it before, you\u2019ll need to scroll down a bit to find it. Otherwise, it might be in your \u201cFrequents\u201d list. Most of the time, the troubleshooter can successfully remove a stuck update from the queue. Go ahead and try running Windows Update again. Even if the troubleshooter says it couldn\u2019t identify the problem, it\u2019s possible that the actions of starting and stopping the service and clearing out the cache did the trick.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fix_Windows_Update_by_Deleting_Its_Cache_Manually\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Fix Windows Update by Deleting Its Cache Manually<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re still having trouble after running the troubleshooter (or if you\u2019re the type that just likes to do things yourself),\u00a0performing the same actions manually may help where the troubleshooter didn\u2019t. We\u2019re also going to add the extra step of booting into Safe Mode first, just to make sure that Windows can really let go of that cache of Windows Update downloads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/107511\/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way\/\"><strong><em>How to Boot Into Safe Mode on Windows 10 or 8 (The Easy Way)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start off by booting Windows into Safe Mode. On Windows 7, restart your computer and press the \u201cF8\u201d key on your computer while it boots to access the boot options menu, where you\u2019ll find a \u201cSafe Mode\u201d option. On Windows 8, 10, and 11 hold down the Shift key as you click the \u201cRestart\u201d option in Windows and navigate to Troubleshoot &gt; Advanced Options &gt; Windows Startup Settings &gt; Restart &gt; Safe Mode.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a little more cumbersome than it used to be on the latest versions of Windows, but it\u2019s still reasonably straightforward. To launch the Command Prompt in\u00a0Windows 7, open the Start menu, search for \u201cCommand Prompt\u201d, and launch the Command Prompt shortcut. You\u2019ll also find it under Start &gt; All Programs &gt; Accessories &gt; Command Prompt. Delete\u00a0all the files in the folder. Don\u2019t worry. There\u2019s nothing vital here. Head to Control Panel &gt; System and Security &gt; Windows Update. Click the \u201cChange Settings\u201d link in the sidebar. It\u2019s a third-party tool called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/download.wsusoffline.net\/\">WSUS Offline Update<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This tool will download available Windows Update packages from Microsoft and install them. Run it once, have it download those updates and install them, and Windows Update should work normally afterward. If it\u2019s a fresh install of Windows 7, there will be a lot of updates, so this may take quite a while. Microsoft plans to release fewer small updates and more bundles of large updates. It will also begin combining previous updates into a monthly update rollup. This will mean fewer individual updates to install, and updating newly installed Windows 7 systems should\u00a0become faster over time.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Download_Updates_from_Microsoft_Manually\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_6\">Download Updates from Microsoft Manually<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re using Windows 11, or the other methods don\u2019t work for you for some reason, you can always download updates from Microsoft manually.<\/p>\n<p>You first need to find out what updates have been released for your operating system. A comprehensive list of updates can be found on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\">Microsoft\u2019s help site<\/a>. For example, if you are looking for Windows 11\u2019s updates, type \u201cWindows 11 Update History\u201d into the search bar and hit Enter. The first result is probably the one you want \u2014 it should be exactly the same as your search term.<\/p>\n<p>The update history page displays every update that has been issued for the operating system on the left-hand side.
