rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le lobbyists met with New York state officials last year as part of a controversial nationwide push for digital driver\u2019s licenses, state records show. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tech giant wants customers to store versions of government ID documents, including their state driver\u2019s licenses, in digital wallets that can then be accessed through iPhones, Apple watches and other Apple devices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company pitches the feature as convenient and secure \u2014 but privacy activists have objected to connecting personal IDs to phones and raised questions about Apple\u2019s state contracts. <\/p>\n<p>As part of Apple\u2019s push, an Albany-based lobbying firm called the Roffe Group met with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles\u2019 deputy commissioner Greg Kline twice in 2021, according to recently released state records.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During a meeting during first half of the year, Apple lobbyists discussed \u201cmobile driver\u2019s license[s]\u201d with Kline, while another meeting in the second half of 2021 gave an \u201cupdate on Apple\u2019s announcement on digital identity cards,\u201d records released by the New York State Joint Commission of Public Ethics show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" Vehicles<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Apple and the DMV did not immediately respond to requests for comment. <\/p>\n<p>The state records do not provide details on the meetings but it appears that any efforts to get New York immediately onboard with Apple\u2019s ID program were unsuccessful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In September, Apple announced that Arizona and Georgia would be the first states to participate in the digital driver\u2019s license program, followed by Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma and Utah.<\/p>\n<p>The company also said that the Transportation\u00a0Security Administration\u00a0plans to start accepting IDs stored on iPhones at \u201cselect airport security checkpoints\u201d in \u201cparticipating airports\u201d without providing details.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe addition of driver\u2019s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet is an important step in our vision of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet,\u201d Apple vice president Jennifer Bailey said at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights and privacy group, has raised concerns about the privacy implications of phone-linked IDs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesigned wrong, [digital IDs] might be a big step towards national identification, in which every time we walk through a door or buy coffee, a record of the event is collected and aggregated,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/am\/deeplinks\/2021\/07\/dhss-flawed-plan-mobile-drivers-licenses\">the group said last year<\/a>, adding that connecting digital devices to real-world IDs risks \u201champering the ability to engage in constitutionally protected anonymous speech and facilitating privacy-destroying persistent tracking of our activities and associations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/11\/14\/apple-sticking-taxpayers-with-part-of-the-bill-for-digital-id-rollout.html\">CNBC report revealed<\/a> that several states who have signed ID contracts with Apple are required to pay for many aspects of the program themselves and agree to let Apple review and approve \u201call public-facing communications\u201d relating to the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApple\u2019s interest is clear \u2014 sell more iPhones,\u201d Johns Hopkins\u00a0Carey Business School professor Philip Phan told the outlet. \u201cThe state\u2019s interest is to serve its citizens, but I\u2019m not sure why they think a partnership with one specific <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> company that owns a closed ecosystem is the best way to do it. For the state to spend taxpayer\u2019s money on a product that serves only half its citizens is questionable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Apple lobbyists\u2019 meetings with Kline was first <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/business\/article\/Apple-lobbied-New-York-DMV-for-digital-drivers-17020751.php\">reported by the Albany Times-Union.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Records show that Apple paid Roffe Group a total of $108,000 for its work in 2021, which also included lobbying efforts around vaccine passports and distribution.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
