\n Culture critic: Rogen\u2019s Israel Hang-Up<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seth Rogen \u201chas always been first in line\u201d in \u201ccalling out anti-Semitism,\u201d cheers Lana Melman at the Jewish News<\/a> Syndicate, noting that the actor was among the first to sign a 2014 pro-Israel statement she circulated. \u201cSo it was a big surprise to hear him speak disparagingly of Israelis, Israel and Orthodox Jewry\u201d in a recent podcast. Rogen argued that \u00adIsrael, as a Jewish state, \u201cmakes no sense,\u201d because it\u2019s risky to put the Jews \u201call in one place.\u201d Yet, as James Inverne writes in the Jewish Chronicle, Jews \u201ctried the nomadic existence thing,\u201d living \u201cwithout a Jewish state\u201d \u2014 \u201cit doesn\u2019t work out so well.\u201d Rogen tied his views to his experience at a Jewish camp, where he disliked his counselors. Sorry, but Israelis shouldn\u2019t have to pay for a famous actor\u2019s summer-camp hang-ups.<\/p>\n

At The Hill, former Democratic City Council President Andrew Stein wishes at least one member of his party would stand up against \u201ccancel culture,\u201d our \u201cnew wave of reverse McCarthyism,\u201d and against \u201cthe mindless violence in our cities.\u201d No Democratic leader, alas, is that brave. Even supposedly less extreme Joe Biden is too busy \u201ccourting left-wing voters to call out these destructive currents.\u201d One of the few people who have spoken out is not a politician: In her resignation letter, journalist Bari Weiss \u201cexposed and denounced\u201d The New York Times\u2019 \u201cunlawful discrimination and hostile environment.\u201d Not heeding Weiss\u2019 words would be \u201ca huge tactical mistake\u201d for Democratic leaders, who should be joining with Republicans to oppose violence and defend free speech. \u201cThese are not election issues,\u201d after all \u2014 \u201cthey are basic American issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

While COVID-19 has brought \u201cunprecedented economic and social<\/a> disruption\u201d across the globe, \u201cthe end of the pandemic\u201d won\u2019t mean \u201ca \u00adreturn to the relatively stable world of the post-Cold War era,\u201d Walter Russell Mead predicts at The Wall Street Journal. Post-World War II, the West assumed \u201chumanity could deal with most natural disasters, health problems and the business cycle,\u201d a level of \u201cself-confidence\u201d that \u201creached new heights\u201d after the Soviet Union fell. The pandemic has \u00adundermined that assumption: Among other things, it has brought back \u201cgreat-power competition\u201d between the West and China and highlighted how \u201cthe information revolution\u201d is \u201cdestabilizing\u201d traditional society. The pandemic is just \u201ca dress rehearsal for challenges to come.\u201d Our \u201cleaders, values, institutions and ideas\u201d need to be ready.<\/p>\n

Religion beat: WaPo Smears a Good Priest <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Washington archdiocese\u2019s \u201cmost charismatic priest,\u201d laments The Federalist\u2019s Christopher Bedford, \u201chas the coronavirus,\u201d yet a snarky recent Washington Post article decided to note that by accusing Monsignor Charles Pope of having \u201cwritten and preached against Christians cowering in fear of death.\u201d Truth is, he \u201cand other front-line clergy like him\u201d are determined to \u201ccare for our souls,\u201d even at the risk of contracting COVID-19. \u201cOver the past few months,\u201d Bedford recalls, \u201cMsgr. Pope has counseled me through some of the most difficult times of my life, despite the risk it poses to him as he \u00adapp<\/a>roaches 60 years. . . . His private \u2014 and now public \u2014 sacrifice was given without hesitation, and for our sake,\u201d only to be mocked by the media.<\/p>\n

Historian: A 75th-Anniversary Nuclear Lesson<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCancel culture\u201d will exacerbate Americans\u2019 annual debate over the United States\u2019 decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan, whose 75th anniversaries are Aug. 6 and 9 this year, fears Victor Davis Hanson at The Washington Times. Yet the fundamental question remains: What alternatives did President Harry Truman have? Letting Japan\u2019s fascist government stay in power would have mocked the millions the Japanese had killed and allowed them to regroup. Invading Japan would have made Okinawa\u2019s \u201cthree-month blood bath\u201d look like \u201cchild\u2019s play.\u201d Letting \u201cthe Soviet Red Army overrun China, Korea and Japan\u201d would probably have \u201cled to more war.\u201d And dropping a demonstration bomb might have shown \u201cweakness.\u201d In \u201cthat bleak context,\u201d Truman opted for \u201ca terrible choice among even worse alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n
