\n Mike Tyson\u2019s encounters with agents and promoters didn\u2019t prepare him for the actual sharks he faces as part of Discovery\u2019s annual \u201cShark Week\u201d programming lineup.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was scared all the way through and was just trying to get through it alive,\u201d Tyson, 54, tells The Post. \u201cI\u2019m a scary guy but not when it comes to adventurous stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne shark kept bumping me and I\u2019m like, \u2018What the hell do you want?’\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all documented in \u201cTyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef\u201d (Sunday at 9 p.m.), in which the former heavyweight champ spends a week-and-a-half in the Bahamas training to go face-to-face with the killer predators \u2014 helped by \u201cringman\u201d Paul de Gelder, an Australian Navy diver who lost and arm and a leg in a 2009 shark attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Listen, this is not a good time to make me feel confident in there, seeing this guy who\u2019s got an arm and a leg missing,’\u201d Tyson says.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t help that he doesn\u2019t like water \u2014 \u201cI\u2019m scared of anything in the water \u2014 I won\u2019t even put my foot in the water,\u201d he says on Sunday night\u2019s telecast. So, he\u2019s prepped in stages for his eventual hands-on underwater experience. He first trains (with de Gelder) in a pool, using an animatronic shark, and then descends underwater in a cage, where he\u2019s miked up for his reactions to the schools of sharks surrounding him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was more nervous in the cage than I was outside the cage,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s so claustrophobic in there. But it got easier and the desire to do it more overcame me as well. After I went down the first couple of times I didn\u2019t have that fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

He takes several underwater dives until he\u2019s out of the cage and ready to actually touch a shark with his bare hands \u2014 in what\u2019s called \u201ctonic immobility,\u201d where its nose is rubbed until it falls into a state of natural paralysis.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was fun,\u201d he says. \u201cI was looking forward to that. [The shark] felt like one big muscle. It was so powerful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was looking forward to meeting a tiger shark but he never showed up,\u201d he says. Maybe it was scared of\u00a0 \u201cIron Mike\u2019s\u201d fierce reputation. \u201cI would like to believe that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Tyson is currently training for his eight-round, \u201cFrontline Battle\u201d comeback fight against Roy Jones Jr., available on pay-per-view Sept. 12 (9 p.m.) It\u2019s his first fight in 15 years and viewers will glimpse him training for that in \u201cRumble on the Reef.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to make a comeback and it\u2019s pretty nerve-wracking,\u201d he ways. \u201cI felt that [the sharks] would give me an upper-hand in dealing with the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, he says that facing an opponent in the ring is still scarier than his underwater sojourn.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the ring, baby, the ring,\u201d he says. \u201cThat gets me going. With the shark, it\u2019s over real quick.\u201d<\/p>\n

But he says he might consider diving with sharks again some time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a possibility, but it would have to be for a good cause,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m not a beach bum \u2014 I\u2019m a concrete type of guy.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
