\n The rate of new coronavirus infections in New York City has dropped to its lowest level since the pandemic began, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday \u2014 as the Big App<\/a>le started reopening for business.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the biggest measure in terms of showing us where things really are,\u201d de Blasio said of the new-infection rate.<\/p>\n

He said that of the tens of thousands of people tested in the city daily, the infection level is now at 3 percent, according to the latest figures available \u2014 \u201cthe lowest number we have seen\u201d and \u201ca great, great sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new-infection threshold that the city had to meet before starting Phase One of the reopening process under state guidelines was 15 percent.<\/p>\n

Other factors determining the city\u2019s reopening included new hospital admissions for COVID-19 and ICU admittance. The threshold is 200 and 375, respectively. The city\u2019s latest figures were 67 new coronavirus patients and 326 people admitted to ICUs with the contagion.<\/p>\n

As of Monday afternoon, 21,877 New Yorkers have died of the virus, while a total of 52,920 residents have been hospitalized with it, and there have been 204,253 confirmed cases overall.<\/p>\n

The city has been a COVID-19 epicenter for the state, country \u2014 and world.<\/p>\n

But its numbers have been steadily dropping \u2014 helping to bring New York state\u2019s new-infection rate now down to just over 1 percent, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said.<\/p>\n

There were 702 new COVID cases reported statewide Sunday out of 58,054 people tested, officials said. There are now a total of 378,799 confirmed cases in New York and 24,299 dead.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
