Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed the founders of the Frosties project with charges relating to fraud and money laundering. <\/p>\n<p>The two founders are accused of purposely concealing their identities to operate a rug pull on the Frosties community by failing to deliver on the project\u2019s roadmap and \u201cutility\u201d which touted rewards for NFT hodlers, giveaways, access to a Metaverse <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> and exclusive access to future mints from the project. <\/p>\n<p>According to a March 24 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/two-defendants-charged-non-fungible-token-nft-fraud-and-money-laundering-scheme-0\">release<\/a> from the Attorney\u2019s Office of the Southern District of New York, 20-year-olds Ethan Nguyen and Andre Llacuna were arrested in Los Angeles and both charged with one count of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering in \u201cconnection with a million-dollar scheme to defraud purchasers\u201d of the NFTs \u2018Frosties.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/press-release\/file\/1486846\/download\">complaint<\/a> alleges that they \u201cabruptly abandoned\u201d and shut down the project within hours of selling out $1.1 million worth of NFTs, and transferred the proceeds to various crypto wallets \u201cunder their control in multiple transactions designed to obfuscate the original source of funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the term suggests, a &#8216;rug pull&#8217; refers to a scenario where the creator of an NFT and\/or gaming project solicits investments and then abruptly abandons a project and fraudulently retains the project investors\u2019 funds,\u201d the release stated. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WOW: if you rugpull and don&#8217;t complete your roadmap, you can be charged with fraud. So many rappers and influencers shaking rn. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v7VW7CjoLp\">pic.twitter.com\/v7VW7CjoLp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Coffeezilla (@coffeebreak_YT) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coffeebreak_YT\/status\/1507072330882863108?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 24, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nAs part of the release, IRS-CI Special Agent-in-Charge Thomas Fattorusso warned that his team is watching crypto closely, and despite NFTs being a relatively new choice for financial investments, the \u201crules apply to an investment in an NFT or a real estate development,\u201d: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou can\u2019t solicit funds for a business opportunity, abandon that business and abscond with money investors provided you. Our team here at IRS-CI and our partners at HSI closely track cryptocurrency transactions in an effort to uncover alleged schemes like this one.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The DOJ also stated that prior to their arrests in Los Angeles, the duo were preparing to launch the sale of another NFT project dubbed \u201cEmbers\u201d that was expected to generate \u201capproximately $1.5 million in cryptocurrency proceeds.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>If they are found guilty, they may face a lengthy stay behind bars as each count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>SafeMoon pump-and-dump lawsuit targets Jake Paul, Soulja Boy and others<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While it appears that more than a few dodgy NFT projects flew under the radar of the DOJ in 2021, there is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/transactional\/expect-indictments-nft-space-soon-2022-02-04\/\">speculation<\/a> that the department is ramping up its focus on the NFTs this year via its National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET) which was formed in October. <\/p>\n<p>In this instance, the investigation was conducted by agents from the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), New York Field Office of the Department of Homeland Security (HSI) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS). <\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"markets_outlook\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
