Winsock stores settings important to how those applications and communications interact in a database usually referred to as the Winsock Catalog.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible for the Winsock catalog to become corrupted by malware, or by accident. Regardless of how the corruption happens, applications on one PC will probably fail to connect to the internet. You\u2019ll might see vague, unhelpful messages informing you that your application was \u201cunable to connect,\u201d or you might see more specific error messages pertaining to sockets.<\/p>\n<p>If other devices on your network are experiencing connection issues, you should try troubleshooting your modem and router first.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Reset_Winsock\"><\/span>How to Reset Winsock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Fortunately, resetting Winsock is usually easier than accurately diagnosing most Winsock problems.<\/p>\n<p>Click Start, type \u201ccmd\u201d into the search bar, and click \u201cRun as administrator.\u201d Windows PowerShell will also work, and you can use it if you prefer. Just remember to run it as administrator.<\/p>\n<p>On Windows 11, feel free to launch the Windows Terminal application instead. If it works, you\u2019ll see the message \u201cSuccessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
