As a result, the man was left unable to talk or even move his eyes, preventing him from communicating in any way, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-022-28859-8\">per a study published in the journal Nature Communications.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While his first request is astonishing, his case might also be groundbreaking in terms of recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccessful communication has previously been demonstrated with BCIs in individuals with paralysis, but, to our knowledge, ours is the first study to achieve communication by someone who has no remaining voluntary movement and hence for whom the BCI is now the sole means of communication,\u201d exclaimed Dr. Jonas Zimmermann, the head neuroscientist at the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering in Geneva, Switzerland where the operation took place, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/want-beer-paralysed-man-communicates-154452109.html\">Yahoo News reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A communications platform for people with complete locked-in syndrome\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/et22mZ_Ovo0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A breakthrough came in 2018 when the ALS sufferer consented to be fitted for the BCVI at the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Surgeons implanted the beer-loving male\u2019s motor cortex with two \u201cintracortical microelectrode arrays,\u201d which decipher the brain signals used for communication. These are then translated into speech in real-time via a special speller program like a neurological Google Translate, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=et22mZ_Ovo0\">as demonstrated in this video by the Wyss Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It took three months of trial and error for the unnamed patient to finally be able to answer \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d when presented with letters, Yahoo <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> reported. Three weeks later, he was finally able to \u201csay\u201d his first sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Communications generated through the \u201cRoboCop\u201d-esque mind-reader included a request to listen to the Tool song \u201cLoud,\u201d asking his mom for a head rub and even orders for various dishes to be fed to him through his tube, including goulash soup and sweet pea soup. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor food, I want to have curry with potato then Bolognese and potato soup,\u201d read one of the orders.
