\n The US Senate on Thursday unanimously app<\/a>roved a bill banning federal employees from using the social media<\/a> app TikTok on government-issued devices.<\/p>\n

Authorities have raised security concerns about the video-sharing platform because it\u2019s owned by the Chinese-based company ByteDance. The vote follows a vow from President Trump to shut down the app entirely in the US by Sept. 15 unless it sells its US operations to Microsoft or another US-based company.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m encouraged by the bipartisan support we have seen in this body to hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable and that includes\u2026holding accountable those corporations who would just do China\u2019s bidding,\u201d Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who sponsored the bill, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The Senate bill follows a vote in the House last month approving similar legislation from Rep. Ken Buck (R-Co.) that bans federal employees from downloading the app on government-issued devices.<\/p>\n

A final version combining the two bills will move to Trump\u2019s desk to be signed into law.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe support Congress\u2019 intent to protect government-issued devices against the privacy and security risks inherent in certain third-party applications,\u201d a White House official said when asked if Trump would support the bill.<\/p>\n

A TikTok spokeswoman said promoting a safe app experience that protects users\u2019 privacy is the company\u2019s top priority. ByteDance has said it has never provided TikTok user data to the Chinese government and wouldn\u2019t do so if officials ask.<\/p>\n

A growing number of countries have begun considering or implementing bans on the app, over its Beijing-based operations, including India, Australia and Japan.<\/p>\n

ByteDance CEO Zhang Yiming told employees in a leaked email Monday that he considers a forced sale to be \u201cunreasonable\u201d and said the US is ultimately pursuing a ban.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut this is not their goal, or even what they want,\u201d he wrote. \u201cTheir real objective is to achieve a comprehensive ban.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
