We say: No freaking way. <\/p>\n<p>Yes, New York may well see another COVID surge, with Omicron\u2019s BA.2 subvariant a likely candidate. But the threat just doesn\u2019t justify major disruptions to fight it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Look: It\u2019s now clear that much of what New York (state and city) did these past two years was a mistake. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/17\/nyregion\/new-york-pandemic-lessons.html\">The New York Times tells you<\/a> that the 2020 shutdown worked and vaccine mandates saved lives, but the same piece also claims that the school closures were less than a disaster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>H<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ily, New York\u2019s leaders seem to get it. \u201cWe are not in an alarmist mode. We\u2019re not panicking over this,\u201d Gov. Kathy Hochul said last week. And Mayor Eric Adams is ending the last, worst schools mask mandate \u2014 for kids under 5 \u2014 as of April 4.<\/p>\n<p>The test going forward: As case numbers climb, the city and state should do . . . nothing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Adams and Hochul \u2014 taking their cue from federal health bureaucrats, despite <em>their <\/em>dismal record these last two years \u2014 still say the loosening of restrictions is conditional on future case numbers staying low.\u00a0That\u2019s precisely the wrong attitude. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Case numbers are not going to stay low. But bringing back restrictions won\u2019t do anything.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re now more than two years into COVID. Over that period, New York tried every restrictive measure short of China-style \u201cdon\u2019t leave your home\u201d tactics to \u201cslow the spread.\u201d\u00a0And <em>not a one <\/em>had a notable effect on our COVID outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We experienced the brutal and deadly surge of spring 2020, with harsh restrictions implemented by Andrew Cuomo and Bill de Blasio. At the peak of that surge, we saw around 10,000 new cases per day, with around 1,000 deaths.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since then restrictions have gotten progressively looser and looser \u2014 through the winter 2021 surge, through Delta and most recently through Omicron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, the numbers are clear. Despite less and less stringent rules, the virus is not killing more people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At Omicron\u2019s peak, New York saw a staggering 90,000 new cases per day \u2014 but deaths were only around 90.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why the massive reduction? Not mandates. Not <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> distancing. No, those lives were primarily saved by vaccines. Also, a lot of New Yorkers had survived COVID already and were protected that way. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/adams-hochul.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"New York Gov. Hochul have said restrictions will be loosened if case numbers remain low. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">APAP Photo\/Frank Franklin II<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Plus, Omicron is milder (as viruses become over time).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>COVID risks are overwhelming to older people (plus others with compromised immune systems). So protective efforts should have a laser focus on protecting the vulnerable \u2014 the opposite of what our disgraced former governor did. <\/p>\n<p>Again: Data across states and countries show that mandates and lockdowns made no difference in the long run. Sensible voluntary action did all the good to be done.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, between vaccinations and past exposure, roughly 95% of America has significant COVID immunity: Serious cases will be rare; the most vulnerable should get booster shots; authorities should stockpile treatments; that\u2019s about it. <\/p>\n<p>We know what works: vaccines and therapeutics.\u00a0We know what doesn\u2019t: forcing schoolkids to wear masks and firing people for not getting jabbed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By holding out the possibility of a return to restrictionism, the city and state undermine New York\u2019s full recovery. Businesses need clarity on their future. Ordinary citizens need to know that stores, subways and schools will stay open.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mayor,  Madam Governor: End every remaining mass restriction (and not just for athletes and entertainers), and let  New Yorkers know they won\u2019t be coming back.
