Blacks and Latinos particularly expressed reservations about potential abuses. They and other supporters of the law argue that limited data shows that the no-cash bail law has had little to no impact on rising crime rates while allowing defendants to remain free pending trial. <\/p>\n<p>But public opinion has turned against the no-cash bail law during a surge in violent crimes on the streets and in the subway.    <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNearly two-thirds of New Yorkers \u2013 including at least 60% of Republicans, independents, voters from every region, and white and Latino voters, as well as majorities of Democratic and Black voters \u2013 say the bail law has resulted in an increase in crime,\u201d said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd an overwhelming majority of New Yorkers, including at least 72% of voters of every party, region and race, say the law should be amended to give judges more discretion to set bail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On other issues:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 70% of voters support temporarily suspending New York\u2019s gas tax, while only 24% of respondents were opposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 69% of voters said the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is over, while 18% claimed the worst is yet to come.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/bail-reform-874.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Only 50 percent of voters approved making to-go drinks permanently legal.\" class=\"wp-image-21683334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/bail-reform-874.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/bail-reform-874.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/bail-reform-874.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Only 50 percent of voters approved making to-go drinks permanently legal.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2014 A plurality of voters \u2014 48% support putting a $4 billion to $6 billion environmental borrowing measure on the ballot this fall, compared to 28% who are opposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 In a closer call, only 50% of voters support a permanent law to buy to-go drinks from bars and restaurants, while 41% are opposed. Hochul has made extending to-go-drinks  post-pandemic a top legislative priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 54% of voters oppose giving people with marijuana convictions or their family members first dibs on obtaining licenses to sell cannabis at retail stores.
