You can take some control over this and have Windows install updates on your schedule, but these options are hidden. Windows Update really wants to automatically update on Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 have access to group policy and registry settings for this, but even Home editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 give you a way to stop updates from automatically <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">download<\/a>ing.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prevent_Automatic_Downloading_of_Updates_on_a_Specific_Connection\"><\/span>Prevent Automatic Downloading of Updates on a Specific Connection<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What You Need to Know About Windows Update on Windows 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you set a connection as \u201cmetered,\u201d Windows won\u2019t automatically download updates on it. Windows will automatically set certain types of connections \u2014 cellular data connections, for example \u2014 as metered. However, you can set any connection as a metered connection.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you don\u2019t want Windows 10 or Windows 11 automatically downloading updates on your home network connection, just set it as a metered connection. Windows will automatically download updates when you connect your device to an unmetered network, or when you set the network it\u2019s connected to as unmetered again. And yes, Windows will remember this setting for each individual network, so you can disconnect from that network and reconnect all you like.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have an Internet connection with limited data? Just mark it as metered and Windows 10 won\u2019t automatically download updates on it. If your connection offers unlimited downloads at a specific time \u2014 for example, during the middle of the night \u2014 you could mark the connection as unmetered occasionally at these\u00a0times to download updates and mark it as metered after the updates are downloaded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Set an Ethernet Connection as Metered in Windows 8 and 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To change this option for a Wi-Fi network, open the Settings app, head to\u00a0Network &amp; Internet &gt; Wi-Fi, and click the name of the Wi-Fi network you\u2019re currently connected to. Click the switch for \u201cSet as metered connection\u201d option on the properties page if you\u2019re on Windows 10. On Windows 11 click the switch next to \u201cMetered Connection.\u201d This option only affects the Wi-Fi network you\u2019re currently editing, but Windows will remember this setting for each individual Wi-Fi network.<\/p>\n<p>To change this option for a wired Ethernet network, open the Settings app, head to Network &amp; Internet &gt; Ethernet, and click the name of your Ethernet connection. We\u2019ll download the updates as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi, or you can download the updates using your data connection (charges may apply.)\u201d By marking a connection as metered, you\u2019ve tricked Windows into thinking it\u2019s a mobile data connection\u2013for example, you might be tethering your PC to your smartphone. Windows 10 and 11 can help \u2014 each lets you set a window of time each day called \u201cActive Hours,\u201d during which it won\u2019t automatically reboot.<\/p>\n<p>To set Active Hours\u00a0on Windows 10, head to Settings &gt; Update &amp; Security &gt; Windows Update.\u00a0Click or tap \u201cChange Active Hours\u201d under Update Settings. From there, you\u2019ll set the times you don\u2019t want Windows to automatically restart.<\/p>\n<p>On Windows 11, head to Settings &gt; Update &amp; Security &gt; Advanced Options and choose an option under \u201cActive Hours.\u201d By default, Windows 11 will automatically set your PC\u2019s active hours depending on your actual usage of your PC, but you can change it if you like.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/img_579691b0e75dd.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Change active hours page. \" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can also override those active hours to schedule certain reboots when an update is ready. You can read more about how to do that here.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using Windows 11, you can pause updates for up to a five weeks at a time.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Prevent_Windows_Update_From_Installing_Specific_Updates_and_Drivers\"><\/span>Prevent Windows Update From Installing Specific Updates and Drivers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Uninstall and Block Updates and Drivers on Windows 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If Windows 10 or 11 insist on installing a specific update or driver that\u2019s causing problems, you can prevent Windows Update from installing that particular update. Microsoft doesn\u2019t provide a built-in way to block updates and drivers from automatically being downloaded, but it does\u00a0offer a downloadable tool that can block\u00a0updates and drivers so Windows won\u2019t download them. Proceed at your own risk.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You should really consider leaving automatic updates enabled for security reasons. But, there is an option\u00a0that will let you choose how updates are installed on your own schedule, but it\u2019s buried in Group Policy. Only Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10\u00a0have access to the Group Policy editor. To access the group policy editor, press Windows Key + R, type the following line into the Run dialog, and press Enter:<\/p>\n<pre>gpedit.msc<\/pre>\n<p>Navigate to Computer Configuration&gt; Administrative Templates&gt; Windows Components &gt; Windows Update.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-224478\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/img_55ba5501b2422.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Locate &quot;Configure Automatic Updates.&quot;\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Locate the \u201cConfigure Automatic Updates\u201d setting in the right pane and double-click it. Set it to \u201cEnabled,\u201d and then select your preferred setting. You\u2019ll also see a note saying \u201cSome settings are managed by your organization,\u201d informing you that these options can only be changed in Group Policy.<\/p>\n<p>To disable this later, go back to the Group Policy editor, double-click the \u201cConfigure Automatic Updates\u201d setting, and then change it from \u201cEnabled\u201d to \u201cNot configured.\u201d Save your changes, visit the Windows Update pane again, click \u201cCheck for updates,\u201d and then select \u201cAdvanced options.\u201d You\u2019ll see everything change back to the default setting. However, it also only seems to work on Professional editions of Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>Download our Disable Automatic Updates on Windows 10 registry hack and\u00a0double-click one of the included .reg files to make Windows Update notify for download and notify for install, auto download and notify for install, or auto download and schedule the install. There\u2019s also a .reg file that will delete the registry value the other files create, allowing you to go back to the default settings. This only worked when we tried it on Windows 10 Pro, not Home.<\/p>\n<p>After changing this option, visit the Windows Update pane in the Settings app and click\u00a0\u201cCheck for updates.\u201d You can then click \u201cAdvanced options\u201d and you\u2019ll see your new setting here. (You have to perform a check for updates before Windows Update notices your changed setting.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-224481\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/img_55ba557e3c2dd.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Group policy modifying update behaviour with a registry hack \" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to do this yourself, the exact setting you\u2019ll need to change is under\u00a0HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdateAU \u2014 you\u2019ll need to create the last few keys there. Create a DWORD value named \u201cAUOptions\u201d under the AU key and give it one of the following values:<\/p>\n<pre>00000002 (Notify for download and notify for install)<\/pre>\n<pre>00000003 (Auto download and notify for install)<\/pre>\n<pre>00000004 (Auto download and schedule the install)<\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>There\u2019s another \u201ctrick\u201d making the rounds for this. It involves disabling the Windows Update system service in the Windows Services administration tool. This isn\u2019t a good idea at all, and it will prevent your computer from receiving even crucial security updates. While it would be nice if Microsoft offered some more choice of when to install updates, you shouldn\u2019t opt out of security updates entirely.
