\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>An ice shelf the size of\u00a0New York City\u00a0has collapsed in East Antarctica, according to\u00a0scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The collapse was captured by\u00a0satellite images, which show the area had been shrinking over the last couple of years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time in human history that the region had an ice shelf collapse and experts wondered Friday if they had been overestimating its stability.<\/p>\n<p>Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute ice scientists Catherine Walker told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-science-new-york-new-york-city-antarctica-4f5f1817bffd632e48e845d4638cc237\">The Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0that the shelf, which spans about 460 square miles and holds in the Conger and Glenzer glaciers, collapsed between March 14 and 16.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) confirmed on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/usicecenter.gov\/PressRelease\/IcebergC37\">March 8<\/a>\u00a0that iceberg C-37 had calved from the remnants of the Glenzer Ice Shelf.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/usicecenter.gov\/PressRelease\/IcebergC38\">March 17<\/a>, it said in a release that an iceberg named C-38 broke off from the shelf \u2013 and that it had calved into two new icebergs on\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/usicecenter.gov\/PressRelease\/IcebergC38A_B\">Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Experts had been watching the shelf continuously shrink since the 1970s, before ice loss hastened in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the collapse process occurred at the start of a disturbing\u00a0warm\u00a0spell last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In parts of Antarctica, temperatures\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-science-colorado-arctic-antarctica-eda9ea8704108bdab2480fa2cd4b6e34\">soared<\/a>\u00a0by more than 70 degrees warmer than average and areas of the Arctic rose by more than 50 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>An atmospheric river was likely the cause and Australia\u2019s Casey Station \u2013 the nearest station to the ice shelf \u2013 hit 42 degrees, or about 18 degrees warmer than is normal.<\/p>\n<p>The Coastal Terra Nova Base was far above freezing, at 44.6 degrees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Antarctic warming was first reported by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2022\/03\/18\/antarctica-heat-wave-climate-change\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a whole, the Antarctic continent was about 8.6 degrees warmer than a baseline temperature between 1979 and 2000, according to the University of Maine\u2019s Climate Reanalyzer, based on U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration weather models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic was 6 degrees warmer than the 1979 to 2000 average.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the world was only 1.1 degrees above that same average.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The southern continent has not been warming much and Colorado\u2019s National Snow and Ice Data Center reported it set a record for the lowest summer sea ice, with it shrinking to 741,000 square miles in late February.<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic has been warming\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-science-environment-and-nature-ed8a508291faa85bbf1ba5ccc5198ecf\">two to three times<\/a>\u00a0faster than everywhere else and is considered vulnerable
